Onboard with silver for the 2012 season!

Hello, I managed to get out for my third hunt of the 2012 season with my roommate / hunting buddy. Armed myself with my XLT and he with his Bounty Hunter Tracker IV and off to a campground we went. We've hit this campground and the woods many times in the 2011 season. Found by accident one day when we were cruising around looking for an impulse spot to try out. Anyways we concentrated in the main field area on the edges in wild pickers. Coins are scattered everywhere in this campground, on trails, in the woods, everywhere. We both didn't have much luck here so we ventured our own separate ways into the woods.

My first decent dig was a wheatie, about 15 mins later I dug a '52 nickel and said, well the finds are getting better lol. After about 45 minutes, fighting with the picker bushes, I again made my way into the main field area. I decided to hunt along the dirt road that leads to the field. About 10 minutes go by and I get a decent hit. It had an 85 vdi reading about 2 1/2" deep. I figured either a clad quarter or a small childs silver ring or the occasional slag / piece of crap copper pipe... whatever it may be I was diggin' it. Took a few minutes as the dirt road is compact with rocks everywhere. Finally dug it out and whats this, I see a silver disc. Wiped off the dirt and about fell over from the excitement of the find. No Date standing liberty quarter. Worn pretty smooth, but I'll take it. This was only my 2nd SLQ ever in my 9 1/2 years of detecting. Continued hunting the road and about 6 feet away get a wheatie about about an inch below the surface. I pounded that dirt road until dark with nothing else to show for except can slag. Not a bad way to start the year! I also got about $1.62 in clad. My roommate did okay as he always beats me with the clad count. I think he was close to the $3 mark if memory serves correctly and he also pulled a wheatie for his efforts. HH all!

congrats on that silver piece. sounds like a cool place to hunt. i bet you was shocked to see that come out of the ground, i know what you mean about your second slq. i have been hunting for over 30 years and have one of them to show for. good job and happy hunting.

Thanks for the kind words. There was a very old saw mill that dates to the late 1600's down the street from this campground. So far at this particular spot my roommate found a 1793 - 96 cap bust cent. Really nice shape except the date is worn pretty smooth. I think it may have been a week strike... I found a worn spanish reale there last season and my roommate also found an 1873 seated dime on an old path leading up to the field area. Silver quarters seem to be the norm at this site out in the woods. It would take us a lifetime to cover it all

Congrats on the silver.
Keep detecting in this area and you'll get more of those:super:

Thanks a bunch and we will be pounding this site for years to come :detecting:
