On this Memorial Day I always remember .......... :cam:

those who have paved the way for me, many of those are my family and friends and I give many thanks to all of them and all the men and women who are serving today, I will never forget the folks who allowed me and allow me to live a free life today for their service to their country, America, thank you.

One of my dearest friends and people that ever touch my life was my dear friend Lester Bush, my neighbor for 8 years until he died in my arms at the age of 80, I will never forget that day or will I ever forget Lester. The day Lester died I was painting my front pouch when Eil stuck her head out the door and said RAY!!!!

I knew it was my old friend Lester, when I got to him and grab him in my arms he was pretty much gone and took his last few breaths of air, I just held him and rocked back and forth and said it's ok Les, go home, we will see each other again my dear old friend as I cried and my heart was being torn apart.

I never have gotten over that day, it lives with me everyday of my life, you had to know Lester, he was what we all hope to be, a good man, a good father, a great American who fought for freedom in World War 2 and just loved life.

At 80 years Lester walked with a cane, had a steel plate in is head from the war but never felt sorry for himself, Lester loved America and who he was and his service to his country, Lester came home to rise 6 girls and 1 boy after the war. I just loved hanging out with Lester, when he saw me pushing my mower over our lawns ole Lester would limp to his garage on his cane to jump on his old John Deer and join me, Lester loved to mowe the lawns and hang out with me but the truth is I loved to hang out with Lester.

When Lester was sitting on his stool in his garage working on one of his old John deers I would help him and we would talk, Lester told me things about World War 2 that you will never see in the movies, Lester talked about what he saw and did. Lester was part of Pattons army that went to the aid of the 101st airborn in bastone, Lester remembered it all, said that outfit was a pretty damn tough outfit Ray, them fellers were down to rocks and hand to hand combat, they paid a heavy price but we got to them before they were all wiped out.

I have many great storys of me and Lester, Lilian told me that Lester came alive again when I moved next door, she said Lester like me alot as a son, I am proud of that because I loved Lester as a father and Mentor, he was a great man and friend that saw it all and I got to share it with him, I miss him dearly.

Here are the battles and Campaigns that Lester fought in!

Sicilian Campaign
Naples-Foggin Campaign
Rome-Arno Campaign
Southern France Campaign
Rhineland Campaign

Here are the Decorations and Citations that Lester earn!

told us a story about how he touched your life, tell us some more. Also, If Lester was here today, I bet he could tell stories not only of the war, but how you, yes YOU touched his life in his later years with you. I love older folks, and I love to listen to the stories they have to tell. Just wish I had paid more attention as I was growing up!

And, like you said, you will see him again someday. For now, he is in his heavenly home, with a big smile on his face, because of the love and the wonderful tribute you posted to him on this Memorial Day! Thank you for sharing this!

growing up, my folks and grand folks taught us to respect and that has never left me. Thank you for allowing me to share my friend Lester with you, I will put together a little story about me and Lester in the near future. I had lunch with Lilian just this past Friday, Lilian is doing well in her new home and always enjoys when I come by to see her, she now lives on the farm with her daughter Linda, she says she misses the house and watching me and Lester cut the lawns and trap the ground moles that would dig up her flowers in her garden, she said we were a sight to behold :rofl.

Lester with the shovel at one end of the moles hole and me at the other end filling it up with water from the hose, she said we looked like the blind leading the blind and she got many laughs watching us :lol

us old folks love you to :wave

There are a lot of those old Vets around but they are going at 1200 a day and they have so much to tell. If we would listen

her,and when she sees you, it brings back good memories. The kind that she needs to hold on to. I know first hand, by watching my mother, how a person feels a bit lost to say the least, when they lose their spouse. I really feel sorry for them. Keep in touch with her, because seeing you brings her Lester! :angel That's what I call people like you who practice the way they were brought up!
