On the GT, what exactly does the "auto" sensitivity do?

The soil here in NWGA is highly mineralized too and in a lot of places I have to go to auto to get the GT to run stable... I alway's try to set the sens around 11:00 or 1:00 but if that does not work I go to auto and it always settles down. However I often wonder exactly what this does and what am I missing when I do this. Is it going to a low sens when I do this or is it continually readjusting itself. I seem to find things ok, so i'm not complaining...just wondering. I have checked targets before by switching from a sensitivity setting to auto after I have a hit and I always hit it in auto too.
So, am I losing targets by using the auto sens?

My guess is that in auto the GT is constantly adjusting the sensitivity level to keep the ground noise from exceeding a certain limit that would interfere with the detector's ability to pick out a good target.

Depending on different locations ground noise will have different characteristics. I think that auto tends to run on the conservative side just in case.

I have seen operating conditions where auto is nearly as good as correctly set manual. Other times, manual was much better.

You could be missing some........probably are.

Don't be afraid to back off on manual as much as necessary. Auto may back it down evan farther.
