One of the best things I ever learned was to stop at a new site and look it over before starting to detect. I look at the layout, where people used to gather, where they walked, what building was where, which spot probably was the busiest, where did they have a picnic or cake sales, etc. Especially at the old Civil War forts I have done has this been important.
I know I have dug more coins sometimes because I studied the layout instead of jumping right in.

Any other tips we oldies have learned ? Steve in so az
