On Detroit television this morning

Just more typical archie BS

what a disaster. this show and this controversy is going to really hurt us all. paint us all in a very bad light...at best!

This might be a bad for us as the TV show. People might stereotype all MDers to be like what they see in these misrepresenting "metal detecting shows". They do not understand that most of us DO NOT detect on sites like these, unless we have permission (usually in writing) from the appropriate authorities. It's too bad that the news cast did not go the extra step to portray the Metal Detecting Hobby for what it really is based on people like us who respect the laws and do not do it solely for profit.

very one sided report.

Have so much to say but in regards to Detroit T.V.

Get as many Detroit MDer's to contact the station and show the "other" side

This will give you an opportunity to show balanced reporting and let the unknowing public what we do

Many of us belong to sites and clubs that help retrieve items and even assist law enforcement on occasion

Very good point. I belong to the "Lost My Stuff Group" which helps people find lost valuables. We have 1,028 members around the world and do this for free. I personally have found two lost rings for folks in my area. I also sent a letter to my local police department offering my MD services if the need ever arises. Oh, and the numerous times that I've been asked by people (most of the time at the beach) to help find something that has been lost. I bet there are tons of people on the forum that do the same thing, because it is the right thing to do and the feeling that you get when you help someone cannot be described. How about all of the stories and posts about lost rings and other stuff being returned to their owners and/or descendants years after they've been lost. This needs to get out to the public more so then all of the negative stuff portrayed in these so called MD shows and followup news broadcasts.

Thanx for posting the link. To answer the "preservationist" buzz-lines, my answer is: Sure, we're "entitled". And so too are YOU entitled to also go into back-yards in Detroit, and ..... yup, see what you can find too. And as for the lines about "for all the public to see" or whatever, my answer is: the public is welcome to see and enjoy, to interpret their past, anytime they want. All they have to do is come over to my house, and see it on my mantle place. Problem solved.

As a Metro Detroit resident I have done some detecting in and around Detroit. You need to be cautious, but there are still many places where it can be done safely. Detroit's great wealth in the late 1800's and first half of the 20th Century really did make for some great metal detecting!

The show has not aired one single episode and already the negative effects are showing up. :ranting: Unfortunately, this is just the beginning. Thanks " Reality TV".

I grew up on the East side in the 60's...There was this place called "The Fisher Mansion" a big old estate built by the Body By Fisher family...they had an awesome huge boathouse, and I bet theres some loot under the water there...anyway, just last year, I googled earthed my old neighborhood, and that mansion is gone and replaced by condos..now furthur north of where I lived was the rich section of town Grosse Point, probably some good loot in the yards and parks there. Detroit was really great back then. Us kids fought all the time! Just fists, no knives or guns..rode our bikes and played baseball, stayed out late and played when the streetlights came on..had a great mixed neighborhood...everybodys dad worked in the Auto business...I dont remember any kind of problems with race being the issue...we were all a bunch of little pissants looking for trouble, thinking we were tough..

yes! this IS the issue! what angers and frustrates me,is the public's perception of the DIGGING.
to be irresponsible in this hobby is virtually a death sentence, and is exactly the reason why.
these shows CANNOT air in the first place!..just sayin'
