Omega GB

Went out Sat to the park for the first time with my omega 8k and the same thing happened but I though oh well it must be the area of the park now I did find coins and one was around 7" so the detecting was ok and hardly any chatter and a couple times I had the sen max out.
Today I got out in my yard and even with the sen at 50 I could hardly tell a good target for all the chatter and I turned the disc up to block out everything but zinc, dimes, and quarters and the ground here is not really that bad usually in the 50's even the mxt I had never had this much trouble with the ground.
It was much worse today than Sat and at the moment I'm not to happy with the omega.

Here's the thing I would GB and the machine would settle down for about 2 swings then would be full bars at the top so I would do a ground grab the bars would be gone a couple swings later the same thing and this went on and on so I finally just ran it with the bars and chatter.
I tried 2 tones, 3 tones and 4 tones and I still couldn't tell a good from a bad target and the trash was suppose to be disc out or at least I thought it was.
Anyone else have this problem not being able to keep it GB or could it just be my area if so I'll have an omega up for sale because this is my main hunting sites.
I said the same thing happened Sat it wasn't the chatter like today it was it wouldn't stay GB but it did detect ok other than that I know the ground changes ever so often but not every foot or 2.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hey Rick,
Did you try doing a frequency shift?Sounds like you have something close producing allot of EMI. Try changing the freq after lowering the sens to the 12 o'clock position.

when i first got my omega i was concerned about that too. if i run sens down to 40 to 50 range i still get good depth and it stays quiet. i have the same thing sometimes the ground balance bars dont keep steady. the top bars seem to always light up. im gonna hold on til snow melts and do some real testing. im also gonna buy the t2 se real soon.

Yeah I tried all 3 freq setting and no diff in any of them.
50 was as low as I went on the sen I was afraid any lower and I wouldn't get over a couple inches I'll try that next time might be awhile though 100% chance of rain tomarrow then turn cold and snow again.
There is power lines accross the road from my house but I never had any problems with that with the mxt but guess that could be due to the khz so I don't know maybe a lower khz detector won't work so well in this area I never thought of that because there's power lines everywhere around here, didn't have any probs when I had my BH and it was a set GB but then again I lived way out in the county then too.
I'm just confused that I can do a GB and all the bars will be gone then soon as I start swinging they come right back most of the time at the top but occassionally they will drop in the bottom area then right back to the top and I don't do nothing but swing it and I mean this is within a couple feet and I tried diff areas of the yard I even went over to my neighbors yard to try it and the same thing.

Sounds like you got your ground balance way out of wack.

You don't check your ground balance by sweeping the coil. You check your ground balance by pumping the coil. The bars will rise over metal. While you are sweeping the coil over a metal object, the number of bars will increase. When you think your ground balance has changed, find a clean spot and pump the coil and check your bars then.

Find a clean spot, ground balance, ingore the bars while you sweep, and go hunt targets, and ever so often pump the coil over a clean patch of ground and check them. Then if they show a bar or two out of balance you can fast grab and hunt some more.

I am in TN. also in my area the frequency is best on 3, Now if you want the Omega to work for you then research all my posts and you will find what WORKS I have a ferrite emi filter on ALL 5 of my detectors including my omega it will lower the emi 12 points and you will be able
to use it, the detectors I use the most is my Omega and se pro. HH:detecting:

Sounds like I need one of those filters :), I had some EMI problems during saturday's hunt and just ended up turning the sens down to 50 or so, I didn't have any problem keep it ground balanced once set the EMI didn't seem to effect that at all, not sure how much changing the sens effected my hunting as the deepest target I've dug in the front part of the school where I was hunting has only been around 4".

thanks! thats the first time ive heard it explained like that. it makes sense. this is why im not gonna worry about it til snow melts so i can hunt and go thru the trial and error. why didnt i think of that lol pump coil check ground....sweep coil to detect.. we all know this but when we r snowed in we get stir crazy

Now that explains a lot Mile I appreciate that,
I did do the pumping the coil when I first started hunting but I never thought about it rising when it would go over a piece of metal and man this area is full of that I know so I guess when I would hit the ground grab it would balance to the metal and throw the ground balance off so there's a very good chance that's what my problem was.
I do remember in the park Saturday it was doing that to and I took a break and sit down for awhile and turned off the detector and when I started back I did a GB and then just ignored it and the performance was fine but the bars kept increasing like you said.
This is new to me a machine that shows the ground bars while detecting my mxt showed the ground in prospect mode only in which I never used that mode at all tried it a couple times but as I said these areas is covered with trash and trying to use all metal mode is very difficult.

Thanks C M, I know with Mikes post what I been doing wrong so maybe that will help but there is a lot of power lines in my area a lot could be due to a small sub station only about a half mile from me.
I don't think I've heard of an emi filter is that what they called and where do you get them at I'll give that a try if I'm still having probs when I get out again.
Also where does the emi filter go I don't want to do anything that would void my warranty I just got this thing. lol

Radio shack, get the rectangle one I use 2 on my omega and 2 on my f-70, wrap black tape 3 rounds around the cable up next to the connector then snap them around the cable/tape. HH

I have found that with my Motorola android phone on my hip that my SE Pro and DFX are sometimes almost unusable. If you carry a phone, turn it off and see what happens.
