Omega coil selection

Habanero

Member
I'm just starting with the Omega soon; about to try to get out this weekend for my first hunt if everything pans out ok. I have the 10" concentric, the 11" dd and the 5" dd coils for it. I don't have what I consider to be very mineralized ground; most preset gb detectors have no issues with my dirt. Is there any reason to put the 11" dd coil on the Omega or just stick with the 10" concentric for general detecting and use the 5" when it gets truly trashy? I have experience with the 11" coil on a G2 I used to own and besides covering more ground and good seperation, I could find no advantages to using it. As a matter of fact, it loved bottle caps more than I could stomach. I hear the concentric coil is not so easily fooled by the bottle caps. Just trying to see what some of you Omega users think of the coils and coil selection and trying to see a reason to hang onto the 11" coil. I've heard that the 11" turns the Omega into a totally different machine according to some users. Also, what's the word with that newer 5x10dd coil? Why choose it over the 11" dd or any of the other coils? I'm also open to tips and tricks pertaining to the Omega! I'm thinking I will hunt with the 4 tone setting; I read somewhere that it's great for listening for nickels.

I like the 10" for general coin hunting, but find I use all three just about equal. Maybe, the 11" a little more. In my dirt, the 11" is deeper, and enough to make a difference. It also is much better around iron and general trash. HH jim tn

Does the Omega with 11" ID bottle caps as coins? I have not gotten to try it out yet to see for myself if it does this like it's cousin, the G2.

The 11" DD will ID most bottlecaps as quarters. This is due to DD coil design, not a shortcoming of the Omega. All DD's will do this. Because your soil is lightly mineralized, there probably will not be a significant increase in depth by using the 11" DD. However, the 11 DD will provide better separation if targets located near each other. The 5" DD get's about 1-2" less depth than the big 11" DD. Very impressive depth for such a small coil. All Omega users of the 5" DD coil feel its a little depth monster. Its great for really trashy areas.
Now there is a ton of info on FMall from Monte, other users and myself on how to use certain sweep techniques with the 11"/5" DD coils to identify bottlecaps. Use the FMall search function to look them up. I am going to PM you a post on this I did for someone else, to get you started bottlecap disc with DD coils.

Thanks for the information and I got your pm. I figured the Omega would probably not differ from the G2 in BC identification with that big DD coil. Like you said, it's not a detector issue, but rather a coil design issue but I wanted to be sure and thank you for confirming that for me. I got out in the test garden with the Omega and I have to say from first impressions, I like the 5" coil the most, followed by the 11" then finally the 10" concentric. The DD coils just seemed to be "sharper" in their seperation, sound and ID but this was almost expected due to prior DD coil vs concentric experience. The little 5" coil seems like a scalpel, a precise instrument if you will. I'm anxious to get out and hunt a little bit to see how the Omega does in the field. I was not too happy in the test garden, but in all fairness, it's really dry and the garden is not old enough for objects to develop a halo effect(2 months old).

Can anyone tell me a little bit about my ground according to the GB numbers? I was balancing in the 60's.

The GB numbers mean nothing in regards to severity of soil mineralization. The GB will tell you only the volume of mineralization. Volume is not the same as severity. The GB values only indicate to the user, when the detector has reached proper ground balance via the GB button or manual ground balancing. If you want to know the severity of mineralization, you look at the FeO4 meter. When you are GB'ing the unit (bobbing the coil), look at the FeO4 meter.
