The gravel pits close to us...know as "The Twin Pits"....had been a swimmimg hole back in the 20's & 30's. My dad had told me of a guy that had been drinkin' and went off the diving board...and never came back up....back when he was a kid. So! one day as I'm coming home from work...I decide to take a little detour past the twin pits. To my amazement....they had been dredged out and everything was just bare dirt! I thought...I'd love to check that out with my metal detector! I talked to the man that owned it and asked if me and my son could take a look around the ole ponds. You never know what might have gotten dredged out! At this time my son was only about 6 or 7 at the time. As we're wondering around my son hollers to me and says he found an old boat oar. I glanced his direction briefly and kept walking...wasn't really paying much attention. Then latter as our paths cross...I happen to notice that what my son Joshua was using as a walking stick....that he thought was a boat oar....was actually a old rifle!!!
Upon closer inspection I saw that it was a octogan barrel 22 pump! More like...what was left of one! Alot of the wood was rotted...but! I still thought he made a really neat find! Would be a good candidate for electrolysis! Makes one wonder how a rifle like that ended up in a old pond...doesn't it!?! We found some other trinkets...no coins though. I was surprised to find an old Model A that they had dredged out of the pond also...a real rust bucket! Makes you wonder if it and the rifle went together? As we're looking around....I saw a big pile of news papers? I though to myself....someones been out here dumping their trash...bums! I kinda kicked at the big pile of muddy papers....and as the bundle busted open...I happened to knotice that the comics looked kinda funny? I took a closer look...only to find that somebody hadn't been back there dumping their trash....or at least if they had...it had been a long LONG time ago! I found that it was a bundle of 2 weeks worth of newspapers from the first couple of week of July.......1937!!!
How cool is that! I took them home and pealed them apart and let them dry. It was really interesting seeing the kind of things that made the daily news in 1937! Like some fella gettin' struck by lightnig while milking his cow! And the ads were neat too! Seeing how much thins cost....A "Princes Slip" for 12 cents!? Suprisingly eggs and milk were rather high for the time I thought! You Could buy a New Packard for $800! I couldn't believe they were in such good shape after all of that time in the water? They were like a giant mud egg when I cracked it open...the yoke was on me! The other Item that I found...close to the bundle of papers...was a mason jar with a zinc lid...full of sourcrout......and it was still good!!! I could just imagine some ole geezer goin' fishin' and taking him a "jar of crout" to have for lunch....it was a hot day maybe in the middle of July? He put his jar of crout on a string and tossed it out into the pond to keep cold....nothin' like a good can of cold crout" on a hot day! Gag! Gag! Barf!)
uke: Maybe the fish wasn't bittin' and he fell asleep while catchin' up on alittle readin'.....say the last 2 weeks worth of newspapers maybe!? Well! Maybe the string broke....or he just plum forgot about it? Or maybe he didn't like crout anyway....it was his wifes idea!!! Who knows for sure! But it's kinda fun to speculate on the possibilities! Still a NEAT find! Goes to show.......you just never know what you're gonna find out there!
