Oldest Silver Find...

Blind Squirrel

Howdy--

I took the V3i to an old Texas Trail to do a little relic hunting. I was using a modified relic program which in the past has pulled eagle cuff buttons at 10"'s. It worked again this past week end. The percussion caps and lead were dug in the 6" to 9" depth range. As the hunt was coming to an end and I was working my way back to the truck I got a loud 83-84 signal at 2"'s. I figured that it would be some oil-field trash - it wasn't! When I saw the edge lettering and the telltale lion I knew that I held in my hand the oldest silver coin that I had ever dug. The coin itself is VERY worn but with my reference book (Catalogue of the Worlds most popular Coins 1965 Edition ) , I was able to positively identify it as a Spanish Joseph Napoleon 10 Reales minted from 1810-1813. The funny thing is that I dug it less than 20 yards from the truck. You KNOW that the next time that I go relic hunting I will be swinging "Low & Slow" in that area! Best of luck and...

[attachment 259703 Super.jpg] I never found anything that old in Illinois.

Congratulations BS, that is a great find....:clapping:

Thanks Rob. I'm sure that with your skill set and equipment, all that you need is a little luck. You will get yours - even in Illinois! I was just lucky to swing my coil over that coin.

Thanks MANDAD76. Often the "Slow" aspect of my hunting style is the most difficult to adhere to. There is so much ground and so little time.

Thanks Larry. That coin was my last target of the day. I thought that I would be going home with only some lead and a few percussion caps. It made my day! But I'm the first to admit that it was the luck of the Irish that I swung my coil over it!

Thanks Burlbark. I usually hesitate to post programs because everyone has a different hunting style, different ground conditions and different detecting goals. But what the heck? This program is nothing too exotic. It works for me at this particular site using the D2 coil.

I start in the Preset Relic Program and I make the following changes:

Sensitivity: RX 11, All Metal 71, Disc 85, TX Boost ON

Audio: Mixed Mode Off, Tone ID ON, VCO ON, Modulation OFF

Disc. Accept --40 to + 93

Ground Filter: 7.5 BP

Recovery: 85

Frequency: Best Data

Of course, depending on current ground conditions, I'll make adjustments to filters and sensitivity settings and sometimes I'll turn MM on.

Thanks, once again best data finds a keeper.

That's great! And only 2" down!?!

2" down,Hmm. What do they say about a blind squirrel and a nut, :clapping:

Rob, I've hunted with an "old timer" for the last 15 years and one time when I complimented him on his good find, he replied: "Even a Blind Squirrel gets an acorn every now and then." I thought it was funny then and I think it's funny now!

Thanks Ohio Digger. At that site (and it's a large ranch) I have made good finds at varying depths, from a belt plate at 14"'s to an "eye balled" Great Coat Button. I wont talk too much about the old rusty shovel that I dug at 2 feet, expecting the strong box full of gold! hahha

That's had to be a great time! Congrats!

Thanks Ytcoinshooter. I'm usually happy if I dig a coin older than I am (it's getting harder and harder to do!). So yes it was a great time!
