Older GTI 2500(but new to me)

I finally got the price down to my limit for a 6 year old GTI 2500 that was here 4-sale locally..Seems to work fine but just got it tonight and have not tried it outside my yard yet.. I use a ACE 250 with sniper coil now. Anyone have some good tips on starting out with the 2500..It sure has alot of options.. It even talks to me, I hope my wife doesn't get mad when she hears the female voice, Ha Ha. Gotta go and watch the VHS that came with it.. Yes I said VHS..Thanks In advance

Start withyour sensitivity at 6 or 6.5. Keep the coil off the ground, run the cable straight up the shaft for about a foot and tape it or use electrical ties. Scan slow as response and recovery ain't all that fast as it has a lot of information to process. If you've never used all metal stay away from it till you learn more about the machine. Pinpointing is deadly on the 2500 and you'll love it. The imaging will spoil you for anything else. My 2500 is twelve years old nd still perking away.

Thanks Bill I had an old gta 500 I used many years ago and sold awhile back.. It feels and pinpoints alot like it did.. Right on the nose..This thing has alot of features that will take some time to adjust to...I think I will like it..Are there much difference between my white colored coil and the black one they have on the newer ones..

If you like your 2500, and I bet you will, I'd get the 12.5 inch imaging coil. Keep your eyes open on eBay and on the classified forum. It is the new black design and I have just begun to appreciate it's effectiveness. It goes nice and deep and once you get used to the weight and balance you'll be able to swing it for longer periods.

I am very fond of my 2500 and use it exclusively. I dig lots of deep targets, lots of shallow targets, and lots of in between targets with it.

I was almost thinking the opposite and go with a small coil because of trashy areas..But the larger coil probably would balance out the weight of the detector. Have you used the small sniper coil or would it mess up the imaging etc...

No imaging with the small coil. The small coil is great but if you want to dig deep, old, coins go with the big coil. I suggest a lot of practice with the stock coil before using another coil. Pinpointing with the bigger coil is somewhat harder. Seriously, practice for a few months with what you have and then figure out which coil would be better for you.

About 6 weeks ago, I began using my big coil a lot more. I had used it maybe 25 hours total prior to then. I now use it more than half the time and during that 6 weeks, I found about 25 silver coins and around 80-100 Wheat Cents. I'm always learning too and I assume I will only get better.

The big coil makes the 2500 quite heavy and somewhat out of balance. I now barely notice this.

My two cents. Read back a few months on the forum. There are a lot of 2500 users here who are experienced and successful with their machines.

Chris

The big coil makes locating targets much easier because it covers so much more ground but once you've located one it may take some time to single it out, assuming there is more than one target under the coil. If you're looking for the deep oldies the big coil is the way to go. Keep your sensitivity where UW suggests for a while, The higher you take it the more likley it will be to false or belltone on large ferrous targets.

Unless you use a shoulder support, the weight can take some getting used to but once you're acclimated it's not that bad. It's a great machine and I'm sure you'll grow fond of it quickly.

You might want to send it into Garrett and get the new mineral chips installed. Think it costs about forty bucks. Makes all the difference in the world in mineralized areas. All the new ones have had it for the past year or two. You have a whole lot of machine there. Good luck.

Bill

The new one is more stable but heavier. I use the old one most of the time even though I have the newer one plus the twelve incher. There is a bit of a learning curve with the 2500 so take your time. It ain't nothing like the old 500. Keep your coil off the ground about an inch or so. It doesn't take well to scrubbing. A hint: If you're scanning and get a signal and it ID's as something you don't care to dig pinpoint it anyway as the target ID will often change when pinpointed. Absolute centering of the target is critical with this one to achieve accurate readings. You can't get sloppy with it and get it right. The coil contains three windings inside, one transmitter and two receivers. That little hole in the center is one of the receivers which is why you can't get sloppy. When pinpointing watch the cursors at the top of the display ( signal strength indicator ). When they line up all the way across you are centered over the target.

Congrats on getting the GTI 2500.:bouncy: It's a wonderful creation.:detecting: It is by far the machine that gets the most use from me. I have every coil made for it including 5" excellerator. Chris offers some great advice in getting that 12.5" imaging coil. It's incredible. If you do decide to get 12.5" search coil for GTI 2500, make sure it is the imaging coil(black, Rhinotough). There are still quite a few of the old 12.5" Scorcher search coils(big, white and round) and they are not imaging coils. They're not bad. They go deep and pinpoint on a dime, but the imaging coils are awesome. The only imaging coils for GTI 2500 are the 9.5" and 12.5" imaging. Uncle willy offers some great advice as well about having the mineral chip installed. If you do anything, get that mineral chip. It really does improve depth and stability. That old white 9.5" search coil is just fine, but if you do decide to get the newer black Rhinotough one, Garrett will give you a discount on it if you send in the old one. Call them for details if you're interested. Best of luck to ya'. Happy Hunting!:)

Thank you all for the great help.. It has rained when I could go out but did manage a little hunting.. I found a couple of pennies is my yard that I have searched several times with other detectors.. I thought it was empty... Each from the 70's and about 5-6 inches deep...The 2500 hit them right on the nose with size and depth..and pinpointed perfect.. I was only out for about 10 minutes.. I'm waiting for the evening cooling and maybe I can hit a park...
I'm from southeast Missouri do you think the mineral chip is worth it if I only hunt in my local area?
Steve

I'd send it in this winter for the chip and a check-up. If you have the old white coil they might offer a trade in for the newer coil. I hear the white coil is hot but falses more. Call before and see what they say. Garrett's service is second to none and you'll only be without your 2500 for about a week.

Chris

I'm not really sure. Call Melinda. She'll give you all the details.
