Old White's Surfmaster question

I recently sold my old Surfmaster II on-line, and was going to take it apart to ship. Sand has gotten in the shaft, and it is "locked" into place(by the sand). I put some wd-40 around the shaft, where the black lower part goes into the aluminum part. No luck. I don't want to force anything, because it has been paid for. Should I ship it full length? I used it for many years, and never changed the shaft length. I did sell it "as-is", but don't want to damage it by messing with it. Any tips would be appreciated.

Let it soak overnight and it broke free...But be careful with the tightner on whites they will break...

Thanks, Elton. I'm probably going to look for a big box tomorrow to ship the detector in full-length. I'd hate to damage it trying to separate the shafts. I just never messed with it after I bought it new(as far as extending or retracting the shaft). Once I adjusted it for me, that's how it stayed for over a decade. I guess it pays to exercise them once in a while.
