Old Whites...New Whites

...I have been detecting for 17 years and have used a lot of models, including Whites. But, I have never used a high end Whites, having last had a CIII SL, modified by Mr. Bill. I fancy another Whites for next year and I sort of have my eye on the MXT. I dont really get a sense of the unit from the ads, so maybe I can get some input on:

+ The graph/VDI and it's overall accuracy.
I have never used a VDI display.

+ Turn on and go features.
I often hunt this way, although I dont mind plenty of...

+ Adjustments and options.
I like to tweak them when it's called for to max out the instrument for conditions.

+ Pre-set menus and adjustments.
For example, I dont really care to "eliminate" pulltabs - but I do like a pretty accurate determination of them when they are present.

Without making comparisons to other models and makers (which is dumb), what can multi-model users of the MXT say about it?

Hi David,

I've been in the hobby since 1972, and the MXT is one of my favorites. I use it primarily as a relic hunter. I really don't pay much attention to the VDI display so I can't give you an experienced answer as to it's overall accuracy. My favorite Whites meter is the one found on the XL Pro.

Turn on and go is very easy, and quick, with the MXT. There are not a lot of adjustments to tweak to max it out, and there aren't any "menus" to set. If I may suggest, read the operator's manual, and also read the "MXT Engineering Report", the "MXT Diary" and the "Whites In Alaska Field Report" to really learn more about this machine. Here is a link to those reports on the Whites website:

and a link to the MXT manual:

Hope this helps, and good hunting,
OldeTymer

...I forgot about the engineering reports! I used to get one for every Whites I had. After what youve said if an XLT wont be more to my liking.

David, I'll take a shot at your inquiries. I have owned and used the Classic III Plus then Classic III SL's with great success, especially when modified by 'Mr. Bill.' Same goes for the Classic IDX & IDX Pro which was a Classic III SL circuitry with the Classic ID TID circuitry added.

Presently, I use my modified Classic III SL w/4" coil about as much as I use my XLT w/6

Monte, Thanks for your ever helpful reply.

Yep it was you who convinced me to get my modified Classic in the first place!

...I am cautious when it comes to using Target ID. It's a 'fun' tool, but you have to be careful not to over rely on it.
Agreed. I don
