Old Well

Zach in LA

New member
I found this old well on an old home site outside of Liberty, MS, last March. I was using my dad's Garrett Freedom 3 at the time. I was looking for an old privy when the detector started going off like crazy. Turns out the privy was a well with a lot of junk from the 80s, mostly old anchovie tins and spam cans, but when I finished pulling out all the junk I got a surprise. A big stump was wedged against the wall of the well and when my friend Tanner and I tried to pull it out, it fell about 15-20ft down. We could just barely make out glass or something glittering on the bottom. Hope to be going back there soon, because there are a lot of old house sites out there.

I would be very careful about the area around that old well. The sides could have and probably have caved/washed in. The area where you are/were standing could be very thin and that glass at the bottom you saw could be where you end up. :nono:

Thanks for the tip but I am more worried about safety than treasure. Besides, I checked the surrounding soil and it is very hard and packed in. To check out the inside of the well, I'm going to lower a video camera with a light on it into the well to see if there is anything of value left in it. Hopefully there will be some nice intact old bottles for my collection.

Maybe a cover would be in order. Something to keep little kids from falling in there. I know it's not your responsibility but maybe the owners need to be notified?

Yeah we covered the hole with some of the big beams that remained of the house so that the cattle that are on the property wouldnt fall in. The owners are very good friends of mine, but i still try to leave the place nicer than i found it.

I like the idea of dropping in the camera. Let us know what you see. Good or bad.
