Old wagon trail is it worth it ?

My brother in law has an old wagon trail that runs through the woods right next to his house that was used years ago not sure when it was there when him and my sister moved there and that was back in the early 60's these pics I was shocked you could even see it but I guess they was shot during the winter time.
My nephew and I walked a little bit of it when I got my first detector but I was new to the hobby and really didn't know anything and still don't as far as wagon trails goes.
All we found was a few old nails and some old bits of iron don't really know what it was but was wondering now that I've been into this a few years now if I should maybe go back and look again as we didn't go to far down it til we quit.
You see the water below the road that where some of the woods was cleared and a pond was dug just a few years ago but the wagon road is still in the wooded area.
What's your thoughts on this and have you ever detected old wagon trails and where should I detected in the middle or on the sides or both?

If I didn't want to detect it, I would sure be walking it. I'm not sure how far you can go on this trail or property but I would walk it and look for clues. Looking for house sites along it or camping spots. Any naturally occurring water spots would be great to investigate. Sides or middle I am afraid would be a toss up. You might like to find things that could have dropped from the wagons, as well as things lost by people walking. Maybe, you could do some research that would tell you how busy the road might have been. Follow it on an aerial map and try to predict where it was going or where it started. You can guess if it runs into an existing modern road that it used to be part of the old road. If it could have been the only was to travel in the area the road had some traffic. This is one of the more interesting potential sites I have heard of on the forum. Please keep us posted and let us know if you have any success.

Thanks Don, the pic on the left below the arrow I made is a clear spot this is actually part of the pond well guess you could say lake, this pic must been taken not long after it was dug because it's pretty full now and from the pic it does look like a pond but as you can see it don't come all the way up to the trail.
Actually that spot is owned by someone else but he and my brother in law is good friends their land joins the lake is on both of their land so permission would not be a problem.
The trail goes down a hill right about the arrow on the left pic and I remember my nephew said there was an old creek bed at the bottom of it so I figure that's prob it at the top of the arrow that looks like some sort of trail that's about the area he said it was at.
On the right pic above the arrow looks like a clearing I'm not sure what that is I know there wasn't any kind of diging that far up so I'll have to check that out it's amazing what can be seen from the air.
