A friend of mine just received a new CTX-3030 and we met at the beach. He had been using his for awhile before I got there.
I decided to quickly compare the two doing a few simple things.
First we both ran Auto Noise Cancel - his came up with a 3 and mine came up with a 10. We both repeated the process and came up with the same numbers.
Then I tossed a dime on the wet sand. His detected it from probably over 20 inches. It was flakey but it saw it. Drop the coil down and it got a solid ID. 12-46 I think.
Then I tried mine. I had a discrimination pattern set for Pattern 1 created by auto accept a bunch of test targets - including dimes. I discovered it wasn't seeing the dime well at all. I went to Pattern 2 open screen and it didn't have the depth his had.
I didn't have the time to look into it but I think the NC setting affected the ID or at least the depth for the dime target.
We'll meet again and spend more time on it but the differences between the two detectors was rather shocking.
It was a crappy day - a lot of aluminum at the beach and ID"s were not stable at all. Didn't really find anything worth talking about.
Just wondering if any of you have seen such differences between machines or coils. Both of us were using the 11".
I also think his screen was a bit darker than mine. Both of us had backlight on with a level of 10 but mine was easier to see.

I have suspected the same thing from seeing results in the field between 2 CTXs. Why would this be,if it really and truly is this way?? Does the machine need to be reset and "cleaned out" of information it's been gathering, kind of like a PC? Hard to say,but I've seen it. It's not GLARING,but noticeable...Hopefully there isn't that much variance in manufacturing!

Did you both noise cancel while the other person had their machine turned off? Otherwise the second machine would have been compensating for the emi from the first one which would likely have set it to a different channel. Hard to make an accurate comparison unless you're both running with the exact same settings, but could be that the other machine is just extra hot for some reason.

The only way to REALLY compare them "side by side" is to first make sure they are both using the exact same settings. EVERYTHING exactly the same. Then turn them both off. Only turn one on at a time use the same procedure. Otherwise you run the risk of them actually fighting each other and one will win out.

He set his before I got there - Auto- and was 3. I set mine as I got there and walked up to him and looked and it was 10. At that beach I am used to seeing mine above 6. We then both did Auto NC's about ten feet from each other and the numbers repeated. I have never seen a 3 at the beach. How about you guys? (Laguna Main beach)

Jason in Enid nailed it.
Everything needs to be identical and I might add both should probably be in Manual sensitivity for side by side testing.
I think I remember reading somewhere about different CTXs being able to run at higher Auto settings than others on the same ground.
Even though you both might have been in Auto+3 his might have been running at a higher actual sensitivity.
Still. 20" on a dime boarders on insane.

Ouch! No we did NOT. Rookie mistake...I took the CTX for a walk today and did fine with depth and all other operations,so your idea about why they were seemingly different is a very good thought! Note made...

It would be interesting to see who noise cancelled first and than the other and vice-versa what # the machines would end up as same settings of course . sube

The channel shouldn't have caused as much degradation in the ability to pick up the dime. Like others mentioned start by looking at the sensitivity settings on each machine. Might not hurt to check for anything stuck in your coil cover too.

Not the coil cover - I clean it after each hunt and just got there. He had not been there very long so that's not it.
I'll try and get back with him to made some more accurate comparisons.

I was just thinking about this again this morning, swapping coils would have been an interesting thing to try...
