Thanks for the guess Ant. I wish the pics were better. The top rectangle area is slanted at a 45 degree angle. It definitely has some age to it.

Spot on! As a former locksmith one of my favorite jobs was to repair and refurbish these locks and hand fashion keys to them. If you look at the latches on your door locks you'll see they are also beveled to allow being pushed in so the door can close completely.
