On the road I live on, there is an old 1 room brick schoolhouse. I got permission last year to detect it, but never had to much free time. This spring, I decided to go give it a shot. The owner informed me that it had been detected 2 years ago, but this didn't bother me because I knew everything hadn't been found. So one day I started searching. I detected for about 2 hours and didn't find a thing. I was so aggravated, so I went home. Two weeks ago, July 4th, me and the family was going to a nearby town to watch fireworks. As we drove passed the school, something was missing. THE SCHOOL!!! I was shocked. But as I thought about it, I realized this was my opportunity to hit the site before the grass started growing again. That Monday I set out to hunt, determined to find something, anything. It wasn't no time and I had my first find; an 1857 half dime. I was amazed! The coin wasn't in great shape but a 151 year old coin! I continued hunting and just as my time was running out, I hit a strong nickel signal. I dug to find a shield nickel. The date is wore off but judging by the design, I know it is either an 1866 or 1867 coin. That was it for that day.
I went again yesterday and took my step-son for the first time. We only detected for 45 minutes but just as we were getting ready to leave, I decided to check out a small spot with no grass. I hit a strong 1 cent signal. What do you know, an 1896 Indian Head penny in good shape. I definitely plan to hit this spot again. Only 3 coins, but a total of over 400 years in age. Wow!
