Old school hunt gave me plenty of firsts

I am still a newby with the 75. I watched LowBoy's video Digging California and learned something valuable from it. But first, I always heard the 75 was deep and I had found plenty of coins in the 5 inch and shallower layer. They IDed well and was doing OK, I thought. After watching LB dig the wheatie with his ID numbers bouncing all over, I figured it was time for me to broaden my horizons. I went to an old school yard in Gary In with a hunting buddy of mine and decided that I was gonna dig every signal that was deeper than 5 inches and had a good repeatable tone. The first target was an 1893 10 centiminis from Italy. It is selling on ebay for 185 bucks at ms64 grade. Mine isnt ms64 but its in good shape. After a few targets that were iffy and were trash I got a dime signal. Popped the plug and scanned the hole. It read 95. I thought iron, so I dug around some and out popped a 1964 rosie. My first silver coin with the 75. This went on for about 9 hours. I ended up with a 52 rosie, which made my first ever 2 silver day, a 1924 25 cent piece from France, 3 1/2 wheaties, buttons, a nice old thimble, a few tokens, and 2 gold plated rings, one of which I believe has real diamonds. Lastly I dug a copper piece from the ground that is either a worn out token or a worn out large cent. It is taking a long bath in olive oil so I wont know for a while. I dug a ton of trash though. My buddy got 3 silvers and a bunch of wheaties. All in all a good first day for me. Oh, by the way, most of these targets were under foil and iron, and all were dug at least 5 inches to 9 inches deep. It was a great confidence building day. TMAN...

I told ya, Tman, silver would come. Nice job and post. It just seems once you get that first silver out of the way, more will quickly follow. Hope you get a pocket full next time out. :beers: HH jim tn

Thanks Jim, Sounds like you did pretty good in Minn yourself. When you were in the trasy area of that fairground how did you handle the multi signals? Did you just slow down and watch the meter or did you dig lots of trash as well as the goodies? Just wondering. TMAN..

I am kind of from the old school and do go slower then many swingers do. Whatever multi tone I am in, I will carefully check out all high tones. I go first by sound then vdi. Since having put in so many hours with the F 75, I have become very confidient with its vdi readings, but don't use them as the final decision to dig, or not, but as another tool. I did dig some trash, not all that much, but some signals, even highly suspecting it isn't good, are just to good sounding and reading, to pass up. Most good targets, though, jump around very little. It is those that do, but turn out to be a good recovery, that keeps us digging some iffy signals. Again, good hunt, friend. HH jim tn

I wasnt gonna hunt today even though the weather was absolutely gorgous. I decided to do a quick hunt at a football field that hasnt been used here in Gary in sometime. I knew there were gonna be some deep coins so off I went. Got a dime/penny signal at about 8 inches on PP. I dug to six and there was a memorial penny. I thought dang, this is great that I get a signal at this depth but a memorial? What the crap. lol. I dug 2 more at 7 inches on the PP. Then I got a good dime signal at 9 on PP. Dug it out at 7 inches, clad. Still happy with the depth, unhappy with the result. LOL. Popped a nickel at 3 inches then I get an 85/87 at 12 INCHES on the PP. I dug and dug and dug. At about 9 inches I dug another damn memorial. I could not believe first that I got a penny at nine inches and I sure couldnt believe it was a memorial on top of that. At this point I figured I didnt bring a back hoe with me to dig out any thing so I gave up and went home. I am still sitting here not believing the depth or the finds. I told my wife I finally have a detector that I have been searching for. BTW GOIO, that is one place we can scratch off the list. LOL. TMAN...

Hey Tman,

At least you got to finish your hunt, we where into our first hour of hunting Pulaski park when we got bump out of the park by a crazy woman and her sidekick Counsel man. That is one place we can scratch off the list also. Running out of places to hunt!!

Another first. I have been hunting now solid for about 4 years. I have never found a gold ring. Ever. I have found some gold plated ones, 2 last weekend as a matter of fact but never a solid gold one. Well the 75 found it for me today. Met my buddy GOIO at a park in Hammond Indiana this afternoon. I got there first and started hunting. The first good tone I got was bouncing from 65 to 85 at 9 inches on PP. I dug around roots and finally saw the golden color at the bottom of the hole. I pulled it out and there it was. It had good hallmarks but were filled with dirt. About that time GOIO shows up and I walk over and show him the ring. He said dang man you already kicked my a$$ and I aint even started hunting. We had a laugh, cleaned the ring and looked at the hall marks. There was a crown, an 18, an anchor and what looked like a small b. I figured out the crown stands for 18K, the 18 I assume also stands for 18K, the anchor is for Birmingham England and the small b MAY be but not sure is either a makers mark or the year it was made. The b and shield unfortunately dont match any of the year marks from 1737 to 1975. I will take it to a jeweler tomorrow if I get time and see if I can get any more info. I also popped out 3 wheaties and a buffalo nickel while I was there. Unfortunately, GOIO didnt make out as well. I am sure he will catch me tomorrow at our old school. Thanks for reading. TMAN...

Well after a finding a jeweler in the area I had the ring checked out that I found a few weeks back. Turns out to be from the mid 1800s and is worth about $1800.00. I was more than happy with that news. Now its time to find some more. TMAN...

Congrats on all your finds. That ring is a sweet find. It looks very solid. What mode were you hunting in DE or JE ??
