Old school find. Coil question

Went to a old school site this weekend and I found these objects. I think the button from what I gathered on the internet is a ww1 army LT. general button. and I also found this pendant among the iron. Two wheaties 1910 and 1936. I know there is a bunch more there but with the mass amount of iron in the ground my 10.5 DD 7.5khz coil I think is too big for the area. I keep hearing people say that the 6" digger coil is amazing in junk areas. Wouldn't it pick up the same stuff or does it do a better job at sorting out the crap and finding the nice objects in between the iron? It's a expensive coil and I just want to make sure I'm getting the right coil for the junk areas. If someone could enlighten me if this is the right coil I would appreciate it. Thanks

I don't have the Digger coil but it only makes since that a smaller coil would work better in areas that is loaded with iron because it see a smaller area.

I only use the 10.5 DD MF coil and what I do when I run in to areas that is loaded with iron is... I slow way down and really check out any signal I get. Since the area is loaded with iron their is a good chance that their is going to be a piece of iron really close to a good target so you are going to be getting a iron grunt mixed in with a good tone if your running in AM. if your running in lets say pattern 1 with 4 tone, your tones will be clipped off some what and that's when you will have to use your gut feeling as to dig or not. Some times that gut feeling will pay off and some times you will just be digging up another rusty nail or bottle cap,

Something else you can do. The Etrac boyz call it TTF. it's when you will run in AM and with only 2 tones. You will have 1 tone for iron and 1 tone "high tone" for everything else. when you run in TTF you will have to watch your screen all the time to see what the numbers are when you get a high tone.

If their is a lot of trash mixed in with a lot of iron then I do not like to use the TTF.

I have said this many times on here,,, slow your swing speed down. That will really help you when you run in to those problem areas.

I have never used the digger coil but have the 6inch 18.75khz coil. I know the digger coil is a good coil. But just think a few months ago there was no digger coil just the minelab 6 inch coils. They was what everyone was talking about and they still would if there was not a digger coil. Yeah some day I will probably get a digger coil but my 6 inch minelab coil has found lots of coins that I missed in trashy areas with my other coils.

This is interesting. I just had this discussion with my brother in law. He lives on an older 1800's property that seems to be ridden with trash and iron. He lives 5 hours away so I haven't hunted his property yet to give my opinion. A while back I suggested that he buy a 6" HF coil. This was before the Digger coil was available. He bought the Minelab 6" HF coil and since taking his 5x10 coil off which he had found a minimal number of coins, he's now found nearly 100 coins on his property with the 6" coil.

He has a Digger coil on the way and I would expect that he should be receiving it by the beginning of next week. I've really been having great success with the Digger coil and I'm really interested to see how much of a difference this makes on his property being that he's dealing with iron and trash. I would expect that this should really help his iron issue out but I'm not too sure about the trash. I'll post an update once he gets it and has some time to get comfortable with it.

Being mainly a coin shooter I have to say that as much as I liked the 6' HF coil, the 6" Digger coil is just so well tuned to silver and copper that I'm not sure how often I'll use the 6" HF coil anymore. It's a great coil but I really feel that the Digger coil trumps that coil by a decent amount when coin hunting. If I had it to do it all over again knowing what I know now, I would have bought the Digger first but unless I was hunting for gold or water hunting I may have been disappointed had I bought the 6" HF coil second.

That opinion is based on how the Digger coil works in my soil/area. Other people may experience different results in their area.

Mapper65, please let us know how the digger works there. Hopefully your brother hasn't cleaned up.
I want a 6" coil, but have been torn between the digger or just a MF. I really would like an honest opinion on whether it is worth the extra cost, coming from another coin only hunter.

I recently purchased a Minelab 6" MF coil.
I watched Gerry, from Gerry's Detectors, pick a 1914D (look it up) penny in a spot two of us had hunted about 4 times each, we were using large coils and he was using a 6".
As soon as I started using it in those trashy areas I started finding lots of thing I had missed with my 9" coil. The most amazing was a stinkin linkon in my back yard where I had done all my experimenting/testing/hunting right after I purchased my 705. The penny was in the hole beside a nail. That alone justified the money for me.
I usually start off with the larger coil in a new area then after determining where the majority of the trash is I switch to the 6". The 6" still sees the trash but it looks at a smaller area and can get in between the trash. If I still hear a lot of blanking I will go all metal and listen for good tones. I recommend turning the headphone volume down at this point or the noise will drive you CRAZY. Since I don't need to hear the threshold tone I don't need a lot of volume.
