thanks for the comments gang. looking on the NPS website http://www.nps.gov/cavo/faqs.htm it last erupted 56,000 yrs ago... if you drive to the top you can see for miles. in the immediate area there is a volcano field... you can see a couple more off in the distance but they''re not as large. It is a VERY unusual sight in the middle of nowhere.
