Old octagonal button found in colonial area

this flat button is size of a penny.......didn't include the penny for reference so I could expand the pic to show the detail. found this one in an area that was an early colonial settlement. any help identifying is greatly appreciated!

I recently dug my first octagonal Button (plain Jane)
I know they were popular in the 1780s

Nice find. After cleaning it with warm water and old toothbrush, dab a little olive or baby oil on it. That should bring out some additional details for further identification.

That pattern is called a beehive. I too cannot find one like it on the web. these where hand made at the time and this could be unique to one maker. I have found a few buttons of this type, they where gilt covered and likely very expensive at the time.
