Old Oak tree...Had to check it out. My 1st old(er) nickel

Just going to a soccer field area when I saw an old oak tree that was standing proud & definitely an old tree.

Started beeping the bleacher area by the field but was drawn to its wide boughs & made my way toward it. I was using a Troy X2 with an external GB mod-very effective machine IMHO. I got a solid tone & it went blank on the coin check. That's possible gold for those who haven't used that system. But its usually a tab or foil or whatever. This time it was a very crusty old nickel. 1911 & luckily the front was still somewhat legible. The backside is a total wipe out even after a mild acid bath. Not a key date & I doubt anyone is gonna find a 1913 in the ground(Million $ nickel!)...

But strange thing is that was it for the day. I also found a buried modern pop can about 8" down about 5 feet away. The nickle was about 3" at most...

So it may have come in with the fill or gotten tilled/pushed up. I found an old (1952) vehicle service tag with a serial#. I also found a few brake pads & a copper crush washer. Seems to have been a mechanics shade tree.

So I have a choice-try for some serious un-masking or do what picking I can around the chaff...

At least I have a new spot. I about ran my local fields dry..
Cheers!

Nice V, I always check under big old trees, over the years people spend time in the shade under them. CO

Congrats on the Nickle ! When I detect anywhere I head to the trees first :detecting:

I will venture a guess that you found your V Nickel in the SW Quad of the old oak. Turn your Disc. all the way down and hope for some deep whispers from that shady section and see if you can't pull out another goodie or two. Bet you can! Not to say the entire shade area of the old tree won't produce, but the SW Quadrant is always where most activity took place.Hammer it the most and see what happens. HH , Charlie
