I went out to a field this afternoon out of curiosity, no houses ever built there no tilling or farming in last100 years as far as owner knows. After fifteen minutes with only a couple of hits, i can and a pull tab I got a faint hit in the silver area, top right corner of screen. Depth indicator showed about 8 inches. Dug 8 inches, nothing so I rechecked dug two more inches lost signal. Still nothing. Out of curiosity I keept diggin at around 13 inches I picked up a faint signal. Dug about 1.5 inches further and held dirt under hand, got signal but found no coin. After sifting through dirt found miniball that looked like a round stone aprox three eights in dia. Did not realize what I had found until I soake in muriatic acid for twenty minutes and then brushed off remainder of minerals. Aprox 38 to 40 caliber by micrometer. At this depth I don't think it is recent muzzle loader and hope it was from old flintlock. It has a flat spot on it where it was rammed to seat bullet. Will post pic as soon as I figure how to upload it. This new explorer is cool, 14 inches deep. Thanks guys .

Forgot to mention I live less than a quarter mile from the old sauke indian trail. Don't know if from that era or not. Is there any way to tell age as I am not too familar with relic hunting and was really surprised to find mine ball.

lilfox, don't get into the habit of cleaning what could be real old and VALUABLE bullets and relic type goodies when you find them as it will deface their value for sure. Most serious collectors will want them just as they were when dug up .. when in doubt ... cry out ! I'm no relic expert by any means but ask around and you'll get the same story ... just a helpful suggestion <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)"> H.H.

At that depth in a field that hasn't been tilled in 100 years I don't think that you have to worry about it being new. Sounds like a winner. Would have been a good one to try that new X1 on.

When I cleaned it I did not remove all deposits, just some of the heavier deposits although I did nick it with my trowel enough that you could see it was lead. Don't want to sell, it will go on the rack with all my oldies. Thanks for the post guys.

Hi lilfox, is it an elongated bullet or a round musket ball? David @ Dixie

David; it is a round ball with a slight flat spot where it looks like it was seated with a ram rod. Also you can see a slight parting line where it came out of mold, slightly crude in comparison to a factory made ball. As soon as I figure how to upload a pic I will post it. I cpuld have really used the x-1 on this one, it drove me nuts trying to find it, I am embarased to say how big the hole was I dug trying to find it. Lilfox
