Old Mines in Nevada

Greetings,

Five or six years ago I bought a Prizm IV in hopes of getting into detecting after retiring. After retiring in 2006 I still haven't had much chance to use it, but that is changing. Prior to this first post I had searched the forums about the Prizm IV and determined my money could have been better spent, but since that money is gone what I have is what I will use for a while.

In the area where I live there are literally hundreds of abandoned mines on BLM ground, and having been to the largest percentage of those old mines I know they are very trashy sites. My question to the forum is simple ... will the Whites eliptical coil provide enough discrimination benefits, for the dollar, to make it worthwhile? Thanks, Ken.

IMHO compared to the other coils available for the Prizm, yes.

Hi Ken

The 4X6 coil is a great little coil. Unfortunately without ground balance your going to have your hands full in the harsh Nevada desert with your Prizm 4. If your hunting for coins and or relics then you may want to save your money up for a MXT/M6 as they have a excellent ground balance system and will operate in the desert with relative ease. If your hunting for nuggets or meteorites then the GMT would be a good choice. Just a few thoughts.

I don't think you're going to have much success looking for gold nuggets with the Prizm 4.
The GMT or the MXT is a bundle of money in these sad economic times, although you might
find a good deal in the classifieds here.

There is the Whites GMZ and there is (excuse my mentioning the competition) The Garrett
Scorpion Gold. But If money is not such a big deal I'd get the GMT by Whites. The Scorpion
also has a good reputation in the Nevada and Arizona gold Fields.

Thanks for input everyone.

My intent for the detector is more for coins and some relics of days gone past. Most of these sites have lots of iron around them (nuts, bolts bits of cable and so on) and they are covered with old shell casing. Buying a new 1000.00 detector is not in the cards for awhile so the Prizm is all there is. Thought that other Whites coil may help getting some of the trash out though.

Ray ... I have found a few MXT's on Ebay and CL, but even used they command high prices.

I'll stick with my original post. If the Prizm is the choice, ground issues or no, I'd go with the 4X6 coil.

Thanks BB, that may well be my best option for a now. Do you have one or have used one? Was looking for some comparison.

I have and use the 4X6 on the MXT, especially in the trashier sites. I've been able to pull goodies out of areas that were near impossible to detect with the larger coils. Hunt slowly and methodically. It's easy to swing past a good signal with the small coils and you will be giving up some depth and of course some ground coverage compared to the larger coils.

Actually a mine is an accident waiting to happen and only brings heartache. Spent part of 25 years investigating and recovering people from mines (hence my knowledge of mine locations) and I will be focusing on the exterior areas.

Hey NGP. If you are in the Reno area, go into the Reno Prospectors Supply and talk to Daryl Nelson the owner. He's a good guy and he may be able to help you out with a good combination for your Prism or maybe a trade for an MXT. Used MXTs can be found and often they are not to expensive. Happy hunting. John
