I am going to cram the last two weeks into this post. For the Christmas spirit, last weekend the small town where I live near France had a small Christmas market, right in front of my apartment. Here they are setting it up Saturday. I was getting ready to go detect a drained lake and they blocked my car in, had to move a few barriers to get out.

Here?s the Christmas market in full swing, lots of people. I walked through real quick but being in my best detecting clothes full of mud and wet I retreated quickly to a hot shower and snapped this picture out the living room window.

I arrived at the beach not knowing if it had been drained, what a joyful sight to see, no water, it had been drained at least 2 meters and the swim area exposed.

But wait, what is that? Looks like a detector and it was. I went over and chatted with this guy for about ten minutes. He was using a brand new Fisher F2 and said it was a great machine. I swung it a few times, very lightweight and he kicked my butt until I finally gave into using discrimination. I detected with him that afternoon and the next rainy day. He also told me several others were detecting the lake and it was obvious with holes everywhere and the junk on the side of the hole. That F2 is the best bang for the buck right now and comes with a small 4? coil and an 8? coil.

Here?s half my finds from the beach hunt from the first day. I found a total of around 10 Euros, a silver ring and two silver earrings over two days. The odd find was a lead bag seal from the 1800s.

Two weeks ago I detected this old mill property for probably the last time. It was built around the 1400s, at least the foundation of the mill is original. It looks like a newer building these days having been renovated to include the mill works. I befriended the owner a few years ago and always stopped by for a chat with him when detecting his land and showed him my finds afterwards, he had given me full permission to detect all of his land. He gave me a nice tour of the mill, very interesting! I offered him several finds but he only accepted a few musket balls from the battles fought around this mill. The last battle fought here, near a Medieval castle in 1704 that the mill belonged to was started by the burning of this mill. Well, sad news about the owner, he was cleaning the water inlet to the water wheel about 3 weeks ago and fell into the pond. I hope he went into serious shock as he drowned and died at 68 years old. I felt really bad having known him on a more personal basis. Rest in peace my friend. The water wheel is at the lower right side of the house and used the whole right side of the house as mill works to the attic. The small pond is to the right of the wheel.

Here are some of the finds from a grass field I could never hunt as it was always too high. An oil lamp wick adjuster and left a small heal plate half.

Found this ornate brass piece in three pieces and it is about 3? tall.

Some of the lead, musket balls and 6 lead seals, some of the lead seals are from Mannheim Germany. That is very far away considering they are from the 1800s. I never did find a lead seal from the mill and had shown the owner several, he had never seen one before. I?ll bet there are some laying around in the out sheds or the underground cellars there, I will never know.

A few relics. A cuff link with red enamel, a button, a man?s brass ring, a brooch with flowers and a few remaining glass stones and another button.

This is an interesting tag made of brass. Has the name Ioseph Volkl, Ioseph is the old German spelling for the name Joseph. Probably mid 1800s and the tag was attached to a harness probably for pulling Oxen. I hunted this field twice and invited a friend along. It was after a long tough Christmas shopping day with the wife. I called my friend and he was ready to go starting at 0800PM, we detected until 1200 Midnight under a full moon and no clouds. The temps got down to 22F/-5.5C when we stopped. Was an awesome all around hunt and well needed after fighting the Christmas crowd. HH, Mike
