This is a nice site for old maps You can view alot without paying. But they wont let you print much. http://www.historicmapworks.com/Articles/historical_street_maps.php

Go to full screen and make as big as possible without exceeding viewable area of the screen.
Press "print screen" on your keyboard.
Go to paint (if you have windows).
Click "paste" in the paint menu and wallah, you have a manipulatable and printable copy.
Save in your preferred picture format. Its not perfect, but you can keep for records and study.

I have tried various ways to copy maps from this site without success in the past. All attempts have lead to a "failure to read file" warning in "Windows Paint" Keep in mind I'm not the most techy when it comes to things like this so it may just be me. I just tried the approach described above with the same failure results. If anyone has other suggestions I'd like to try them. They have some good old maps on this site but prices are ridiculous.

I was able to print out a few i looked at,but they are small. And i wouldnt buy it unless i really want it for those prices. If they cut it to 10 bucks a copy,id buy a ton. They loose money with the greed.I havent tried the above way yet.I just viewed the map.stretched it the best i could and printed.I can read the road names and see everything with the magnifying glass app on my phone.

Niagra, I do half a county at a time. The pic is big enough to make out all the detail with nice clarity.
I wasn't very clear about my first line, I was in a hurry when I wrote the feedback. On HistoricalMapWorks, go to fullscreen mode (if you didn't already know that).
It cuts all the map manipulation icons from the screen. Then you can zoom the map to fill the computer screen. Move your mouse pointer out of the way and hit print screen key.
HMW lets you d/l a sample map but I didn't think it was much better than just copying the screen. The only real difference was the watermark. I can live with that.

Hunter, you should be able to paste your screen if it copied properly.
You could Google the question "why doesn't print screen work". I think there is a setting that prevents it from working but I can't remember what it is.

Good luck, HMW is a good site, I use it all the time. However the "basic google earth overlay" function rarely works for me.
