Old map research pays off

We finally got some rain last night and I spent 3 hours in periodic rain showers enjoying the cooler temperatures and ease of digging! One day last week I was driving the whole 2 miles to work and spotted a driveway that led to a vacant lot...this got my mind going all day, and after work I decided to walk the lot and look for clues or evidence of a homesite. Saw brick fragments and small pieces of concrete, and near the road about 100 ft from the driveway I saw the water meter...bingo! The proof was right in front of me.

Got home last night and checked my online older map resource and sure enough, a good sized house once stood on the property prior to 1958. It was demolished in the 1990s, but there was a trailer that stood on the property until 2004, when apparently the entire lot was cleared except for the large trees. I started hunting the front yard area and quickly found a Wheat cent about 3" deep. Easy pickins in 4 kHz. My arm band case has disintegrated, so I set up the "4K Super" program as is, put the control box in my back pocket, and began swinging. The trailer must have burned at some point because in one area I started getting GREAT signals but all of them were blobs of once-molten aluminum that rang up in the high 80s and low 90s. Thought I had a silver half dollar at one point - turns out it was an aluminum slug from who knows what...seems like I can always find the stuff that sounds good, but isn't a coin!!!

Found the boundary of the concrete driveway, and in Reactivity 3 I started getting all kinds of signals. Picked out a single high tone and out came a Memorial cent. Picked out another one which was a 1939 Wheat. I stayed in this little area and dug more aluminum, but was finding enough Wheats to keep me excited! I started working my way back towards the heavy aluminum area, and noticed a large oak tree which looked as if a bulldozer had scraped about 2-3" away from its base. Got a banging high tone which was a half-exposed 1947 S Wheat. Five feet away I got a low and broken tone, but it sounded identical upon a 90-degree sweep. At 4" down I saw a blackish rim, and pulled out silver! A 1945 P war nickel was now heading for my "silver bag". Then I got a goofy mixed tone, but it sounded mostly high - so I figured "Oh, why not?!" Out came a 1930s or 1940s Gem Micromatic "Clog pruf" razor (introduced in 1934) which was missing the razor cover. Still a fantastic find in my opinion!

The last hour of the hunt I concentrated on the base of this old oak tree, which is only about 6 feet from the road, and found plenty of good targets closeby. Not sure what the "Dogface token" is exactly...maybe someone could help ID it...

Never have found "clad dime slaw" before, but there's a first time for everything!

The buckle rang out loud and high, really sounded like a silver half...but almost any buckle is still a great find - turns out it is from the 1930s or 1940s as well. Will be going back later today in daylight and focusing on the other side of the property. Gotta love those forgotten homesteads!

I did same thing. Searched a map last week and found a site where a house was on an 1872 map. Right in the corner of a park that's there today and nothing in that area but grass. Going to try to get there during the day this week (one of the benefits of being retired!)

Man you guys are lucky, the main place I detect is an old travel center town (Needles, Ca.) and there is zilch or about zilch info online to find, nothing.....

LOL

Go figure.....

Just talked to a guy 15 minutes ago that said he might be able to get me permission for 1700s property.
