Old house lot, 1266x & 1270

I have been watching a old house lot since they removed the house thinking I am going to work that someday. Well several years went by and I watch as about everybody in town worked the lot, my wife stopped one guy and ask him how he was doing and pulled out several silver coins and showed her.

This past week I thought I would see if there was anything left, my first trip I took the 1270 with the 5x10 coil and worked about and hour. I came up with one 1919 Mercury dime and a 1905 Indian head penny. The next trip I took the 1266x with the 5" coil, I hunted about 2 hours this time and found one 1939 Mercury dime and a clad quarter. All the coins were in the 4 to 6" range.

there you go, by the way how do you like that rare elliptical coil? bet your signals were nice and loud!

That 5x10 elliptical is the cats pajamas, it has close to the same depth as the 8" round, with the ground coverage of a 10" on the long side and the trash separation on the 5" inch side. I don't run the 8" much anymore, my thoughts is I need to hunt a little different then all the other guys out there.

Thanks,

Ron

Question Time?

In these two hunts using the two different detectors did you pretty much cover the same area, I know it was the same yard but did you hunt different sections of the yard with each detector or did you cover the same section with both detectors?

Also, during the hunt did you get the idea that one detector really had an advantage over the other?

Did you have any EMI problems with either?

I believe you got a new set of Gray Gost headphones, did you use those on this house lot hunt, did they work good? and does the volume limiter seem to really help with those weak signals?

A1. Some overlap, but the good targets were in different section. Just a note, all three of the good coins were within 10' feet of each other, but different hunt sections.

A2. Big question, I don't think I could say one has it over the other because of the coil changes. But I did notice a difference, the good targets on the 1270 were a little on the breaking up side, I just about passed on both the Indian head and the dime. The 1266x seemed to be a lot more ether positive or negative, no maybes.

A3. No EMI problems

A4. The Gray Ghost headphones were used and they work good, the only change they need to make in the design is to add air condition:rofl: I am running the volume on the 1270 wide open and it really takes out the loud big targets to a comfortable level. I like them a lot and I am pretty sure I am getting all the sounds. I don't think the Gray Ghost do any kind of amplification of weak signals, except now I can run the detector volume wide open.

Thanks, Ron, a very helpful encouraging story. I was wondering if you rehunt 90 degrees (say EW then NS) and how much you if any you tighten up your swing overlap on a yard like that?

Pastor Tom,

Glad you enjoyed the little story and I hope others have. As for hunting in different directions, I for sure have to say yes to that. My hunting locations are so few and far between I really give them a work over. I may hut the same spot several times with direction changes, different coils and different detectors.

Now you may find this interesting, the rest of the story, the house lot I was hunting is a lot our church bought to put in additional parking. Wish I would have got in there before we removed the house and filled in the basement. My guess is the heavy equipment covered a lot of nice coins for ever.

Try that 5" know that you can get max vol. bring the SEN all the way up and drop the Vol so the detector noise isnt so bad and go for 2-3 on the Disc. you'll be surprised what they missed. and don't forget to shoot sometimes in straight iron disc as primary with about 3-4 on the DISC for secondary, can't believe you got iffy sig on a I/H and Sil/dime, unless they were real deep or near junk.

I would tighten it up by 50% and and swing Diag. corner to corner then side by side l. to r. and top to bottom thinking of it as a box, gridding it also makes it pretty tight but not many people do that much anymore, at least you don't hear about it, I use it when there's deep old coins are coming up and alot of the junk has been taking out. Made a 10' x 10' grid with 1' x 1' squares, just lay it down it keeps tight swinging without the wandering, when you've do that slide it over to the next 100 SQ.FT.

Okay Shooter you got my attention again, I am with you up to the 1' sq grid. Are you say to make something like a 10'sq fish net for very large fish?

Yup 10x10 and the squares are 1'x1', I used 1" wide military name tape which I had laying around, but 1/8 chord will work fine, mainly to keep you swinging tight, you can make it 5'x5' if you want, i also used 4 plastic tent stakes, 1 in each corner.
