old Garrett American AM-2

I own a Garrett American AM-2 which I bought 18 years ago and used a few time only.
After 18 years in the wardrobe I try to use it but nothing happened.
The metal detector was stored in the original box the batteries removed and is in
perfect condition. No rust, all the circuits in tip top condition.
I put new batteries ( 2 x 9V Eveready super heavy duty), followed instructions to start the detector.
Nothing happen when i adjust AUDIO KNOB , no sound. Battery showing nothing.
Checked connection of the batteries and OK.
What should I do? Take it to a dealer to have it tested? Or is there anything I should do to start it after 18 years in the wardrobe?
Thanh's for your time. Regards.:confused::ausflag:

that doesnt work kick it in the guts! On a more serious note make sure the batteries you have purchased can be used in your machine....... even though they are the batteries you use in your detector they maybe too powerful, instead of a super heavy duty set just try a normal set of batteries,alot has changed over an 18yr period when it comes to powering your device. Once you have looked into that and still no action I guess its up to you to see where you want to take it. Take it in for a check up etc. Detectors are soooo cheap these days and there are plenty of good ones out there for the price. The Garrett Ace 250 and 150 range are very well priced and both are easy to use and powerful machines to boot. Goodluck!
Cheers!

Try alkaline batteries. Standard batteries sometimes don't have the proper poop to run a detector. Also contact Mary Penson at Garrett maryp@garrett.com and get her skinny on the problem. After setting that many years totally inactive the electronics could get a little flaky.
