Old Garrett ADS II versus Ace 250

[size=large]Hi all, I've been metal detecting a long time since I bought a Garrett ADS II (1982). I think it is a great GEB detector, but it is getting heavy to swing, 6ea 9v batteries. I wonder if the new ACE 250 would out do the old ADS II? I know some of the features like manual GB is not on the ACE, but think the depth is probably better than the ADS II. Also discriminating should be better with the ACE 250. I usually hunt at old homes and parks. I moved to Everett, Wa and don't think the ground is too mineralized. Thanks for any suggestions!

the 250 will go a lot deeper more cost effencient using only four aa batteries very light no more sore arms and backs.a little hard to get use to pinpointing but one off the best coin machines on the market.

The ADS is probably a little deeper in the all metal mode but from what I've seen the Ace is definitely deeper than the ADS II in disc mode. You can't even compare the weight as the Ace will feel like a feather compared to the ADS and four AA's seem to last forever. I have an original ADS Deepseeker that I still occaisionally use with the huge coil in all-metal mode for deep relics but the Ace250 is much better for hunting coins/jewelry. The 4.5" sniper coil for the Ace 250 is about $70 and works great for picking goodies out of heavy trash and working close to fences or metal posts.

THe ADS is a great old machine but technology has advanced some in the past 26 years. The depth on the 250 will surprise you. I live across the river in Portland with the same soil and it works great here. Even with the small 4.5 inch Sniper coil the 250 will get seven inches. I hunt a lot of bark chip playgrounds and I've dug quarters at ten inches in the chips with the 250.

I dont know about the ADS-2 ,I had the ADS-3let me tell you depth was not a problem,ON the other hand the weight was bad. I dug a 50c at 12 inches!!
