Old farm site advise

Enimor

New member
I am pretty much an avid lurker here and love reading all of the advise from seasoned individuals. I have a vacation planned in the near future where I have access to a few old farm sites where the rock foundations are visible. Years ago I spent a few hours hunting one but the amount of trash overwhelmed me. I hunt a lot of trashy parks but this was unreal.

Being a proud owner of the CTX and a good solid week to detect I was hoping to get advise from those that have experience with being successful at these type of sites. I only have the stock coil so was thinking about spending an entire day cleaning up as much of the trash, iron, etc. as possible to hopefully get to whatever good finds should exist. Two of the sites are at least as old as 1879 and were occupied for at least 80 years and are on family property, most definitely haven't been detected before other than my failed attempt. Other than the old stone foundations there are no other structures, except for one site has a well that has been covered with a concrete slab.

I may be able to get access to a 8x6 SEF for my Etrac but would like to get advise on what to do with my CTX in case that doesn't happen. Any advise is appreciated!

Hi Enimor
If like you say you have the time to do so, cleaning out the heavy iron might be worth it since you may unmask an awesome target or two OR, you may find nada. If I was on a short schedule ( like I couldn't go back regularly) I would probably spend more time away from the foundations where the trash is more likely to be scattered a lot more. Hitting the flat areas nearby and along the nearest stone walls would be my choice area for swinging my coil. Don't forget to try along any access roads or paths to the area, and anything headed towards water. I would also grid the area, I have mentioned before how I find it boring since I like to wander from place to place but I have also made my best find's doing so. Afterwards when you are heading home you can feel somewhat confident that you hit most likely areas as least once, and have a better idea of where to hit next time.
As far as settings go I would be using Gone Hunting's with the sensitivity either in auto or manual as high as it would go.
Good Luck, Please let us know how you do..

I hunt a lot of the old stone walls and if I am finding a lot of more modern trash( pull-tabs, screw caps ect. ) I reject them out. I also use the 6 inch coil and check the walls themselves. Prisoners and slaves were used to build many of these walls and they would hide things in the crevices. Be carefull sticking your hands and fingers into these places. Go slow and check under the large trees close by where the workers and others may have taken breaks. Good luck and HH :minelab:
