Old farm hunt, indian, wheats, silver

New member
hunted an older farm house today with my buddy Marty (nonickels) he scored a nice 1902-o barber dime. I found a 1889 indian, 1909 wheat, 1941, 50 wheat, and a money clip. Not too bad of day! That puts me at 47 indians for the yr, only need 3 more to hit my goal of 50 !

Sounds like that 3KZ coil does it again! I am very pleased with the performance of that coil myself.

Are you hunting through a lot of iron at these old sites? Are you running in the Factory set Pattern 1, using the 9" 3Khz coil? At roughly what depth are you picking up the IHs? Can you get a good ID at 8" with that coil? Sorry for all the questions, but success like yours is hard to ignore and think we all want to learn what you're obviously doing right? TIA.

That is a nice looking Indian.

TONS of iron, thats all farm house yards are!
Yes Pat 1 almost 99% of the time, I switch to AM every now and then to check certain targets that are bouncing wilding and I suspect that they are deep iron.

Indians, and older silver average 5-6" in my area. Sometimes 7".........it is RARE for coins to be deeper than that around here, not sure why, I always wonder why I read about people saying they dig down 9-10" and get a mercury dime, if that is true, I sure would not like it!

I have dug about 3 silver dimes that were 8+ inches, 2 early barbers and one seated, the seated locked on 38 from all directions, the deep barbers were reading a quiet whisper and saying 44-46 from 3 directions, Not sure why?? The barber dime I dug sunday was only 5" and it was a solid 42-44, I was expecting a silver quarter! I think the numbers on the 3khz are a lil off, nickels are NEVER 10-12 for me. They register as high as 28-34 IN THE GROUND, once out they read 12, explain that!!! But I am not complaining at all......when at an old house I dig the first couple coin signals even if they are 2" deep and I try to gauge the depth of the coins in the yard. Some yards I hunt have ZERO clad and everything is old, AND shallow too. Many times, like sunday I dug no clad, and a lot of the older wheats were still in the plug.

Man I would love to spend a couple days hunting with you and Mark!

Maybe when I get to working part time and get to set my own schedule and the kids are gone. You know life settles down and WE ARE ALL OLD AND GREY.

Are you finding that the 3khz coil is hitting clearer on coin targets, in among the trash than the stock coil did?

not sure really, it justs seems like I find a lot more silver and indians with this coil though, most coins around here are not that deep 5-7" but I think it hits harder on the deeper ones than the stock coil does

I read your technique that you posted in an earlier thread and I'll bet that combo with the 3khz coil has a lot to do with it. I hope you don't mind me asking a few questions, but your obvious success makes me want to try your technique and I just obtained a 3khz coil myself. I noticed you're using target stability. Why are you using it if you're primarily going by tones? Are you digging pulltabs or just ignoring them? Have you found any metal buttons this way? Are you pulling much of any other relics out of old homesites using this method? Like Clock parts, spoons, etc. Again, sorry about all the questions, but you're the first truly successful X-terra user I've seen share his technique.

yes I dig all kinds of relics, when on an old homesite I dig almost everything non ferrous IF I have time. I use target stability ever since I started with the xterra, I guess I just never quit using it. I do did by tone, if it sounds smooth, I dig it.......lol
And yes I dig pulltabs, never too many at old houses, maybe 2 or 3. And yes I do find old buttons, nothing real cool though

Another fantastic hunt, wtg! Nice looking indian, only if that 1909 Wheat was a S VDB that would wrap things up :surprised:
I shall be joining the Minelab family soon once I can sell the Ace
