Old Excal

New member
I just bought this detector, but the seller said the coil is not stock. Can any of you excal experts tell me what coil it is? Is this a good coil to have on it? I guess I am asking if it looks like a good set-up? The detector, scoop, new battery and charger for $500. I figure it can be a back-up if nothing else. The seller also said it had just got back from be hydro tested and calibrated.

Thanks for any help or advice,
Chris

Hey ya looter, that is a fine unit indeed, a NY Excal(1994-1996)! They originally came with a horseshoe type coil, called a Seasearch. What is the O.D. of the coil on the unit and any distinguishing markings on the top-side, like Tornado or BBS? I cannot see the unit clearly as the shot needs to be zoomed in closer. It looks like the previous owner made some type of effort to mount the control housing sideways, originally the unit was right side up though, so when it is swung through the water, it is like a boat paddle and fatigue sets in MUCH faster. The unit is STILL mounted to a stock S type shaft and this is basically nice art for the closet, or the recycle bend, LOL! What you need next is a straight shaft. I use and have always used the Lightning Rod on my units. This is the source for them: http://demarcodetectorsales.com/html/Newprod/NewProducts.html
There are many brands and configurations of the straight shaft, but the unit becomes more controllable in the water and is a GREAT REDUCTION in fatigue, so you can hunt longer. I will put a couple of my units on here to see how the unit looks mounted to the Lightning Rod.

Wow GH that old excali looks in good nick, although the coil wire seems a bit strained

Yeah, that was the prototype pic, already dealt with it. I wound it too tight initially. She's pretty cherry for 1997 model.

Thanks Gulf Hunter,

I will not have the unit in my hands until Jan. It is waiting on me in the states though. I thank you for all your help though. I will be bugging you by mid Jan I'm sure. I like the shaft you have....haha, that's what she said! WHAT I MEANT to say was....does the shaft you have break down shorter for snorkeling purposes? I need a shaft that I can use standing up, but also want to be able to shorten it for snorkeling around the shore line. Or do I need it? The guy over here snorkels with his at full length. Seems like it would be easier if it were closer.

Thanks,
Chris

You are welcome just lemme know, would be happy to help out. There is some conflict on shortening the Lightning Rod to an acceptable length for snorkling though. I can't see anything in these waters, so I just wade. Snorkling and detecting at the same time seems like it would not be practical, as you will be dealing with surge and waves crashing onto you, how are you going to overcome that?

You MIGHT want to check out http://www.andersondetectorshafts.com/, as they have several different models and lengths to choose from. I believe Kellyco is a distributor of the line in the states, but you can order direct, although the company is in Canada and shipping can get hostile. I have used one of their shafts before on a CZ21 and it is a nice shaft. Hope I did your question justice mate, good luck and we'll speak in Jan.
