i ordered one of the cd's from www.davidrumsey.com that has the county i live in and 6 other counties around me. looks like a great source of hunting sites could be found
using these atlas cd's. they are from the 1880's and show old fairgrounds, picnic grounds, racetracks, and many other features that could produce some great hunting sites.
the cd's are 9.99 plus a couple of bucks for shipping.....a great deal i think. just reading from some sample pages i found two possible sites to hunt, first was 1868 old settlers reunion held in hendersons grove, and over 600 people attended. the second was another old settlers reunion held in 1870 at stevensons grove. these sites are within 15 miles of my house and are gonna be on my list of sites to try to locate. i live in west central illinois, and you can get a complete state set for about 70.00. pretty much every state is available and you can order as many zones as you like. i'll give you guys a heads up when i get my cd in a few days. good hunting............joe dirt

I found the 1880 Iowa Atlas on-line and I haven't yet quite tapped all the way into that resource, I also like to use Sanborn Fire maps, however they are only good for town "centers"

Hope to hear how you like the atlas on the cd once you get it. Does sounds like a potentially great resource.

i got my atlas cd a couple days ago. it has nine other counties on it besides the county i live in. these maps are from 1886 and show school houses, churches, ferry crossings and several other interesting places. i noticed that down the road from where i live there was a church on one corner and across from the church there was a schoolhouse. both are long gone and now are farm fields. the cd only contains maps of each county and none of the printed parts of the atlas. so if it leads me to a couple of sites to hunt i feel it was worth the 12.00 i spent on it. good hunting..........roger
