Old Copper ring that was gold plated?

I found this ring today....i found it at a place that was built in the 1860's. At first it was completely rusted so i tried my best to see what was underneath and it looks like its gold plated and has what I believe to be the letter A on the outside of it. I don't know if there were any other letters, but it seems like it had a design once upon a time. Would you say this is probably an old wedding ring of some sorts?

I have one also but yours has a lot more plate on it than mine. People didnt always have enough money for real gold.

Nice find !

I've found several old Rings that were gold or silver plated copper at one time - most or all of the plating is gone on mine.

Another thing I was told by a local Jeweler last year was ...
" Solid Gold jewelry that was made around the year 1900 or earlier was not stamped with the Karat's - stamping the purity of the gold on jewelry has only been done for the last 100 yrs.
So if you find a ring that looks like it could be gold - but is not stamped inside - take it to your local jeweler and have him check the gold content !

well this thing was completely green and rusted when i pulled it out of the ground. I was able to use a steel brush on a dremel tool to get most of the rust off and this plating was underneath. Theres still plating on the inside as well
