Old Community School...........

Kelley (Texas)

New member
This is an old community school for black children located near Sequin, Texas. It was built in 1924 and closed in 1962. It is now being used as a community hall by the folks living in the area. It is located in a remote area and not many folks outside the area know that it exist. This picture was taken with a Canon SX10is bridge camera in Auto Mode. It was hot and the picture was taken in extreme harsh lighting conditions. Kelley (Texas) :)

That is an interesting looking old building. It is interesting that the building is raise off of the ground. Many animals probably travel in and out from underneath it. I bet there are quite a few treasures in that ground. :)

I spoke with a gentleman that went to the school and was a member of the last class to graduate from it. The school is now a State Historical Site, but the land around it is not. He told me where the old cemetery was located, down a lonely narrow country road. You could not see it from the road, and I had to go through two ranch gates to reach the cemetery. He also showed me the field where they played sports like football with other schools, nothing but a field now. It would be a metal detectors dream. You could hunt anywhere except the immediate lot that the school is on, but you would have to get permission. He also told me about an old store that is long gone, and where the site is located. He also told me about other good sites where you could metal detect with permission. Unfortunately, I never got the opportunity to hunt the sites. To his knowledge, no one has ever metal detected any of the sites. What is funny is that someone can find this school from the picture posted and the information I provided, but they will not find the other sites very easy, some probably never if not actually shown their locations. Kelley (Texas) :)
