Old Coins & Expensive Rings At School Playgrounds? You Bet!

Just wanted to pass along a tip here. Most people would think you aren't going to find any good rings or old coins (freshly dropped) at a school play ground but I can tell you otherwise based on some "inside" knowledge. A family member works in a school lunch room and kids are constantly bringing in old coins that they either snatched from Mom or Dad's jar of old coins or were given them because they just didn't have spare change for them to use for lunch that day. Also, I was told of a number of times kids have brought in a nice ring that Grandma left on the sink or something because they wanted to show it off or give to their sweetheart. For that reason I wouldn't pass up a school play ground when you don't want to travel far and have a limited amount of time to hunt, whether it be for old coins or a nice ring. You might surprise yourself. Not to mention the fast clad totals you can rack up when hunting in the stone or mulch they normally have around the play ground equipment. I haven't done much of that type of hunting for years but plan to test the waters more this summer for the potential ring and coin finds.

Just recently found a nice silver chain and got $15 for it. It was down about 8 inches. Also found a nice little 14k gold ring with a bunch of small diamonds and got $49 for it. And finally $16.23 in change...all from the the same school yard in the same day of 3 hours of hunting. I often get days like that at modern schoolyards.

The secret to hunting modern schoolyards is to go to the schools that are in the better neighborhoods.....that were built in the early to mid 20th century and are still in good neighborhoods. The kids have money to drop....and moms and dads lose rings and chains while watching their kids play soccer or playing baseball.

Good finds there. Recently a family member told me about a boy who brought a very expensive wedding ring into school. He was showing it off to the family member in the lunch room and talking about how he was going to give it to his girlfriend. They took the ring from him and called his parents. He had found it on the sink at home and it was his Grandmas. Several other similar ring stories but I can't remember the specifics. Kids always are bringing in silver coins, buffalo nickels, halfs, and other such coins to spend in the lunch room. Most of the time they tell them to keep those coins and go ahead and get their food, and that they can pay for their lunch the next day with modern coins. Doesn't always happen that way, as this family member has brought home a nice little collection of coins over the years.
