I have a few old coins from the 1700's that I found and there is still a bit of detail (like a date on another) that I can't make out and it seems like a magnifying glass ain't cutting it. I bought a usb microscope (Petit E Microscope) that had a 100X resolution on it's lowest setting in the hope that the video camera could make something out but it's just too much and lighting is also a problem. So, I'm wondering what is the best method to look at some of the finer details on a coin.
One thing that has helped me is using a soft pencil and piece of paper with the coin below it and then lightly rubbing the pencil on the paper to make an impression, that works very well for dates, words and to get a feel for the "pictures" on the coin.
You guys? The digital age is here so I'm hoping some kind of software (less resolution as I just tested) might be available (and probably for cheap, the microscope I bought was discounted to 25 Euro).
