Went to an old and I mean very old Church today. This was the only thing found.

I found this when the guy who gave us permission to hunt came over wanting to know the value of a few Coins. I told him with out even looking close that he had a 43 Steel and that if it were copper he had a Million dollar Coin. I gave him $3.00 for it, just because I doubt I will ever Metal Detect another one. I did find one a while back that was very very rusted and stuck between two 44s.

He had a handful of Foreign Silvers but I had no idea if they were valuable or not. We found nothing good at the old Church but I was grateful he let us look.

Isn't that mind blowing? I've detected exactly 3 VERY old churches and have found just about SQUAT! It is VERY clear that every Tom Dick and Harry have detected these in the past. Can you imagine people coming every weekend with money for the "plate" yet not one of those coins was EVER dropped ANYWHERE on the property? All the meetings, ice cream socials, etc. and not ONE COIN made it out of a pocket? Sorry,it doesn't happen that way. The way it DOES happen is that people in the past have either gotten permission or just gone there, the latter was apparently quite common and not too many people were concerned with it. With everything tightened up these days it sucks to work sometimes quite hard to obtain permission to a place that turns out to be krap. We are definitely in the trailing stages of the hobby, though good finds are still waiting...my VF 1877-S Seated quarter from last Sunday sure confirmed that!

I find you must find a common link with the homeowner/landowner. I try to keep them talking and look for something to break the ice. I am a Veteran, Retired Federal worker, and any other thing I can use to get permission. My buddy calls me the silver tongue devil. I had one guy call me back to tell me know. I kept him talking and got permission to hunt. If you must offer for them to see all your finds and they can have which ones they want. Just let me take a picture first. Better to get permission to hunt than to keep driving around with no where to hunt.

Just got another old property next door to where I found coins as old as 1919. Did it by letting the Owner know that I had hunted next door and sent pictures to the Owner of that property. even though it took me over two weeks to hunt it, he never knew I had been there. Covering my holes pretty good.

I agree very strongly to the "Common Ground" theory. I got the old church by stopping in and visiting with an older Guy asking about events (Fairs) held on Property I already have permission to hunt. I sat on the porch with him and visited. Next thing I knew he is inviting me to go to another old house he owns as well as the Church.

I also make it a habit of playing Dominoes with the Senior citizens on their Senior citizens day at City Hall. Only thing I really do not like about that is getting beat badly by a 80 something year old Women who gets her kicks out of talking trash the whole time. Come to think of it I believe that is the most fun of the game. One of these days I might win, when I do i will be doing the trash talking.
