Old canteen when I was a young boy................

I was going through a few boxes in the garage when I came across my old canteen that my Uncle Doc gave me when I was around seven years old. All that I know about the history of it was that it was given to him when he was boy. I did not use it very much because the cork cap would leak under hard use. I ended up getting one similar that had a screw cap on it, and no leaks. Now I am using Google to see if I can find out how old it could be, but no luck so far. The cover is wool and is stitched around the body of the canteen, and the lid or cap is an actual cork. Has anyone ever seen one like this, and if so, do you know how old it could be? Kelley (Texas) ;)

Hi Fred,

I think I have seen a similar canteen in pictures of WW-1 Dough-Boys.

It's an "oldie" for sure,

But it is definitely older than WWI. It's shaped like an "Indian Wars" 1860-1890 era cavalry canteen. But it could be as old as a civil war "smooth side" canteen. It's hard to say because all the ones I found online have "US" printed on them. But I would research the "Indian Wars" canteens as the look like the best match.

had one similar except that the sides did not have the flat surface on them but rather continued curve and a screw top that looked like that one. At the time I was in the boy scouts but we got most of our stuff at the old Army and Navy Surplus stores. Canteens, cookware, sleeping bags, duffle bags. I remember I got the sleeping bag, with the mosquito netting and head cover on it for $1.00 and a parachute canopy that I made a tent out of for another $2.00. We have more fun in those over summer while out of school. Later we got the big heavy, sticky wall tents. I enjoyed the boy scouts. Wish I still had some it. Lot of good memories there. Gotta be stuff like that on Ebay that might be of help to ID it.
