old button

Found around 5 inches deep in clay , found along with a few old bullets and one pennys. I am new to metal detecting and do not know if I should clean it ? I think it is a old military badge any help would be gratefull. On back of button has sherlock and co covent gardens which is london.

Yes it is in one piece which is a good sign I think its from around 1800 to 1840.

Do an internet search (Google) on Sherlock and Co. Covent Garden London. They made Military and Livery buttons with your backmark from 1845 to 1880. Nice find!! GL & HH.
