old bullet

Today I found this old bullet up on a bluff overlooking the James River in Virginia. The nose is hollow and has what appears to be a piece of wood stuck in it. Judging from the size, etc. I first thought Civil War, but now am not sure-- the bullet appears to be made of something other than lead...maybe brass or copper, and the base seens awfully smooth and well made to be Civil War. Any thoughts? Thanks! Jack.

That is a modern copper jacketed bullet. Probably a hollow point with something stuck in it.

Thanks--thought it not being lead might be an indication of being modern. Still, quite a large caliber!

No rifleing or crimp marks, might not be a bullet, please post a photo of the base, that will help.

Here's one of the base--about 14 mm. in diameter. (wire is a paper clip to hold it in place)

It looks like a modern muzzle loading bullet, seems to be a .54 caliber (14mm).

Thanks, Ant--that sure looks like the puppy to me! It sure looked old, but only a few years in the ground will really age things, especially copper or brass. Thanks so much for solving the mystery! Jack.
