Old Brass Button

TomB

New member
My pard found this very nice old brass button . The button has flower design on the front and no back markings. I'm thinking late 1700's or early 1800's but not sure. I have not been able to find a pic of a similar button. TomB

It appears to be a colonial button to me.1700's
Alot of the times the locals made these buttons and put any design they could imagine. It would be almost impossible to trace.around the 1800's "federal period" they started mass production of buttons and you will find a company name or lettering on the back.
I enjoy finding decorative buttons more than coins.they are more personal..Nice find

yours eric in nj

Thanks Johnnie! I thought it was an old copper of some sort when I found it as the florals looked like lettering to me at first glance and the detail of those concentric circles of dots was so fine. When I flipped it over I saw the shank and knew what it was! It was my first colonial flat button ever so I was happy and quite a nice one too. It's about the size of a half dollar!

Wherever you got that hunt very well if you find 1 button there is usually lots more around.
I dug around 50 on the last site i encountered...
