Old Bottles

While detecting an old site I noticed an animal hole so I looked down in it and I could see a few old bottles on the side of the walls. As I began digging the hole deeper and wider old bottles were stacked on each other and they were not broken. I was only able to take out about a dozen of the small medicine kind because I had to walk into the site and I didn't have a bag.
I went back a week later with a friend from work and we took out about 250 of the smallest kind. We never even made it to the bottom of the hole. Interestingly the bottles were all stacked neatly with very few broken. The site dates from about 1870-1910 so I guess thats how old the bottles are. I'm not a bottle expert so I really don't know much about them.
The picture is from the third trip we made in which we were able to get a 4X4 to the sight instead of trying to haul them out in bags. The picture shows mostly the big beer, wine, and whisky bottles but if you look close you will see a hundred or so small medicine type.

Great find!
My cousin found a 'hole' many years ago out in the west desert area when coyote hunting. He could see 'stuff' inside, but the opening was a little tight and he was running low oin light. Not far away was a little less than the top half of a wagon wheel exposed.
He wandered around unitl he found his way back to a road, just as he had 'wandered around' to stumble upon this site. Probelm is, he never could find the site again!
I'd sure be interested in hearing more of the story! E-mail me, if you would, as you learn more about the history of the site.
