New member
does this look familiar to anyone it was very deep and it was reading in the 70- 80 didnt say iron so thats why i dug it, i assume its very old but dont know thanks for looking bryan

Looks to be an old hatchet head, kinda like an axe with a hammer handle.

Likely the composition metals of the axe could give it those VDI numbers.
Unless it was masking something better under neat it
Did you recheck the the hole ?

I think it is an old roofing axe. They are used to put cedar shakes on the roof. the shape, size, depth and the heavey rust most likely confused the detector. i found a gold stud earing with my MXT that VDI -95??.I'm not an exspert on whites only has my MXT for a few weeks but I have seen a lot targets VDI way out side what they should. It may have over loaded the detector in some way and it missed the correct VDI.

I have found these same ax heads at various fort sites dating from the 1860,s and 70,s, although I'm sure they still look the same I would guess yours is definatly old. Items such as ax heads, ox and horse shoes, guns, etc give good readings, I dig all just to be safe. BTW I like your Gadsen avatar, if you see a Gadsen decal on the back of a silver X-terra stop me and say hi! Good luck.

That's an old axe head. Did you need a backhoe to get it out of the ground? Hope you rechecked the hole. HH, Nancy

Nice find looks like an early trade axe what was the history of the area you were hunting .In early areas we never pass over iron hits overloads sometimes turn out to be great relics. In relic hunting Rust is a must you just never know good hunting. :canadaflag::detecting:
