Old and New trash, yeesh!

At little background, I live in a colonial cape style, story and a half house, built around 1850 in Connecticut. I believe the property it was built on, probably had some sort of development prior to 1850, as I've found an 1805 large cent just off my porch. I'm a bit new to detecting, add to that I'm trying to learn an Explorer SE, and add to that 200+ years of track on 1/3 of an acre of land = headaches. I was out this evening shoing my wife and 3 year old the new MD letting my wife detect through the field of iron. (yes, the 3 year was perfectly behaved, did not step on my detector, did not reach into the holes pull up dirt and throw it, step on my pinpointer etc, he was "perfectly" behaved!) On pin point mode, I can go over roughly 80% of my property and find metal. Below are some pics of items I found with in about a 12" circle, ranging in depth from 2" down to 8". Oddly enough the "54" was the deep find. The 3 nails are old forged nails, and the spring thing looks like a cloths pin spring, and I have no idea what the "54" is other than it is what got me digging in this area. It was extremly hard to pinpoint. My question, is the iron circle old or new? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Jai..

Here are some close ups of the ring. Anyone have an opinion on it's age and perhaps its use? For what ever reason, I think of that metal circle on a horses bridle.
