old 1913 school

Im got permission to hunt at an old school does anyone have any suggestions where to start at around the school or does it matter thanks for any suggestions

I would start along the side walk entrance. I dug 85 coins in one trip at a nearby high school, and one silver ring. Then see what you got and measure your deepest coins. Don't compare dimes with quarters, that's like comparing apples and oranges.

I doubt very much you will find any silver with your stock coil. Most of my silver is at 7" and deeper. If you decide you like the hobby you could invest in a 13" ultimate coil which should get you down to silver area. Then go back over the area and see how many more coins you get. You will be amazed.

Of coarse the back play area should have plenty of goodies also.

I trust you have a good pinpointer. After retrieving a coin use your pointer to sweep the area and remove some of the close to surface trash that maybe hiding deep coins.

A whole school may take you all summer to complete but you will have learned allot before your done.

I started with a ace 250 last year and progressed to a ctx3030. 50 silver's and 7 gold rings since I started. Not to mention a couple hundred in clad.

The cheap lite weight Garrett are not bad machines to start with. Any signal that dings penny or more in two directions is worth a look.

Happy hunting!

The site needs to be done methodically and slowly, maybe by doing sections at a time, try and look for the old school playground or field call it what you like, look for very old established trees that could have had a swing attached to it as many a nice find could be in that location as things tend too fall out of pockets when kids swing on them.

No set rules on how to detect any site as such, but some areas i would have thought would produce more than others especially with the kids on swings and other play items.

Thats a good place to practice stabbing surface and shallow clad with a screwdriver...once you got it all cleaned out of an area, you can dig very judiciously...I would not want to start by digging a hundred holes on your first day in..they might rethink the permission thing..if they see you out there with nothing but a short little screwdriver, they will relax.

You can walk around and NOT dig too, just to sort of give you the lay of the site....sometimes I will do that for 15 minutes or so before I attack...just to lay out what I would consider the heaviest good target harvest route..
I like to hunt the edges of the teachers parking area...jewelry mainly, especially if snow has been plowed onto one edge.....that should be a very fun place that will keep you entertained and teach you a lot!:clapping:
Mud.

I would start front then back then both side. Large old trees and back lawn where children played. 1913 = Barber dime, barber quarter, V nickel and Indian head cents is possible! Mercury dime and buffalo nickel for sure! Have fun!

I went today for about hour and a half dug a couple of pop tabs and pencil erasers dug what looks like a old buckle and i think a silver tooth and a bullet casing

Allright! That's a good start. I see your going right after the gold by wasting no time on digging some pull tabs. Only about 995 more low tones to go and you will get your first gold.

I remember my first high school play ground l must have pulled 150 quarters out of that yard.
