All,

Could use some help in iding 4 items I found. Here is the background... I was on my Uncle's farm in Orange, VA. His home has so much historic significance. The home has 2 additions/sections. The first was built in the late 1700's and had a slaves quarters inside . It still has the secret passage ways and quarters behind the main walls that the slaves used to sleep and go into the bedrooms to take care of the kids without walking thru the main portions of the house. The second part of the house was added in the mid 1800's and was the site of many get togethers by top military brass and soldiers during the Civil War. It has a ballroom in it and this was used to entertain etc.

I was out most of the day on Saturday and went to the largest tree off the front of the house about 50 yards out. The tree is the biggest oak tree I have ever seen .. and found the attached items all in the same 10X10 patch about 5 yards away from trunk of tree. The first looks like a piece of a bowl or pitcher with a triangle handle. Very heavy, cast iron and with three rings. The handle is tight and as you can see and appears to be spot welded. The second looks like a bracelet or shackle. Again heavy iron with one eraser sized hole in the side. The other is a flower designed piece of metal that is thin and not perfectly cut. The last piece appears to be the bottom of a pan, very thick and heavy cast iron. At first I thought it might be the bottom to the pitcher or bowl but it is thicker and the size doesn't seem to fit. Any clues? My Uncle and I think these are from the civil war camp ground, or earlier, or do you think they appear to be more recent?? ....

I found no coins or buttons etc. but my cousin who was in another area of the farm with me that day, did find two civil war buttons... But these finds seemed to puzzle me more and have me a bit more exited then finding coins etc. - especially the one with the handle on it...

Thanks to all for looking.!

I think your first piece is part of a cooking pot , there would have been a triangle on the other side and a wire bail handle between them . similar to this one.

Fisrt picks are a cooking pot, or a spitoon...The rest...I have no idea...

HH,

The flower designed piece of thin metal could be the front pocket of a match box. They were usually made of tin, and had a square back and the pocket was attached to the flat piece. Are there any little square tabs on the piece, this is how they would attach to the back. Also the match box would be nailed either to a door post, bed post, or on the side of the fireplace mantle. They would also strike the match on the matchbox. This is a good possibility, but by no means a 100% positive ID. Ron

Could the 3rd pic possibly be some sort of item from a wagon wheel hub? I was thinking that, or from a spyglass???
