ok which way is the best-max headphone volume or max xterra volume?

It seems everyone is doing it different. I personally have been maxing out the headphones so that each ear is balanced equally and then use the xterra volume control to set a comfortable level. My question is to those doing it the opposite and maxing out the machine volume and then fine tuning with the headphone volume . What do you see as a benifit to this ?
 
Maximize headphone, with the caveat that depending on the last step(max) on the control may cause the sound to distort. If this happens back off one step and increase detector volume.

you use more power by doing it that way. The amp is pulling full power just to feed it into the resister in the phones. turn down the detector and save the batts.
