I have been using the stock 12" with my MXT for both beach and tot/parks. On the beach the 12 is great, but in other trashy areas or near steel poles or fences I need a better coil with good penetration and better close in work. Have been reading the remarks on the 6x10 Eclipse by white's and the newer 8.6 sef model. Sounds like the 8x6 has better penetration than the other. Every time the 6x10 is mentioned it is linked to prospecting for gold. I am leaning on the 6x10 since it has such a good track record, but much is not reported on the other. Most of my detecting is here in Florida at the beach or in parks/schools. Also should I get the rod that connects to the coil for easy swap out. How do you mostly change out a coil? Thanks, only 4 mos. into the hobby. My wife thinks it is becoming a obsession. (she is right). Have found about 4 rings so far. Marty

Hi Marty, I use the Eclipse 6x10 and it performs well, but I would give a SEF coil every consideration due to the configuration and depth claims and pinpointing benefits described by some posters.
Yes, if I had the money I would buy a SEF coil too.
I can't get in real close to metal structures with the 6x10 unless I detune a bit. Lets face it, most coils behave the same in that situation. Consider a 5" coil if you wish to use it for that.
I am not close to beaches so my 12" coil stays home.

I'm a great fan of the 6X10, use it most of the time. I personally prefer to buy White's coils although I've seen many good posts on the others. As to getting close to fences, playground equipment etc. NOTHING works better, in my experience, than the little 4X6 shooter.
Excells in heavy trash and tight areas as well.

I use the 6" coil for tight areas and trashy areas and is the coil I use probably 80% of the time. I use the 10" DD the other 20% of the time. HH John

Many have spoke for the 6X10 and yes it is a great coil, but the 6X8 will have it's place too, it depends on how trashy your ground is. The depth should be about the same but the 6X8 might be better suited for VERY trashy ground with slightly better separation, but you lose a little in coverage too. All coils are a compromise of depth, separation, coverage and weight.

That 6x10 eclipse is hard to beat.. although I have not tried the SEF
I run the 6x10 99% of the time even though I also have the 4x6, 950 and 10DD.
I just love the 6x10

Hello I have and use both of these coils. My favorite one is the SEF 8x6 an the reasons for that being my favorite coil is it is lighter in weight and makes it easier for me to swing it for longer periods of time without it hurting my shoulder and it seems to me to get a little deeper for me than the 6x10 does .Now I do have a little harder time pinpointing the sef than I do the 6x10 sometimes with the sef I get off to the side a little bit . This is just my opinon from useing both coils.,with that said I agree both coils are good coils and you should be happy with eather one . They both get real good trash seperation and the 6x10 gets a little bit more coverage . But for me the coverage wasn't one of my concerns the depth and weight problem was as I would have shoulder pain after a couple hours with the other coils I had.

I had to make the same choice and went with the 6x8 and seldom take it off, I've been very impressed with the performance & seperation. I mostly park hunt and can pick through the trash with no problem.

That would be the 5.3 Eclipse and with every MXT or M6 or Spectra model I owned, that 6

Here are a couple of reasons that elliptical coils are seen on prospecting rigs. One has to do with the terrain. A round coil, while giving better depth, can sometimes give far less depth. This arises from it's not being able to get between things (boulders, logs, etc); therefor it must go waayyyy over. While a really small round coil could be used, the ground coverage kinda sux. Another reason to use an elliptical coil is for pinpointing. Yup, today's pinpointers can get pretty sensitive.. but can they detect 1/10- 1/3 GRAIN targets? All I do is grip my detector by the center shaft, rotate the coil, and use the sensitive tip of my elliptical coil to pinpoint. It's easier to do so with such a coil vs. a round one since the hole doesn't have to be as large (bigger hole= more work). I've tried using a pinpointer but, seeing as I do my hunting (Coin/jewelry/nugget) with a DD elliptical (for the most part), a pinpointer is just a PITA; extra weight, bulk and hassle. ..Willy.
